Tides

Range, max 2.5m; min 0.5m.

Waves under normal weather conditions: Waves in the port of Yokohama are minimally affected by wind because the distance to shore is relatively short. The wave size is generally determined by wind velocity and the distance to shore. On the basis of these two factors, wave heights observed by the Yokohama District Weather Bureau are most frequently 0.3-0.5m high under a wind velocity of over 10kts. The annual occurrence of waves higher than 0.5m is approx 17%, while those exceeding 1.4m are rarely observed. However, because this observation is related to only one third of the wave heights observed, there is the possibility that waves exist with maximum heights which are 60-80% higher.

Waves under abnormal weather conditions: The heights of waves under abnormal weather conditions such as typhoons in the last few decades, computed on the basis of average wind velocity and distance from shore, are as follows: Typhoon Kitty, 3.1m; Typhoon Isewan, 3.2m; Typhoon Catherine, 2.6m; Typhoon Makurazaki, 2.2m; Typhoon Muroto, 2.6m.

The highest wave was 3.2m, during Typhoon Isewan. Also, the max height of waves during this typhoon was 60-80% higher than the average height under normal weather conditions. It is therefore possible for waves 5.5-6.0m high to occur once every 10-20 minutes, although this would not occur continuously.

Swells: Bohso and Miura peninsulas virtually shelter the port from high seas swells. Even when there are 10m high swells in the Pacific, they are only 10cm high in the harbour, which is nearly insignificant.

Currents: The current in the port of Yokohama varies from day to day. Affected by weather conditions, the surface current is highly complex. At flood tide, sea water comes in from the outer breakwaters at an average rate of not more than 0.5m/sec. At ebb tide it goes out at a much slower rate. The currents in the navigation channels outside the outer breakwaters are the swiftest of all currents inside and outside the port, but they do not run at more than 2kts.
