Approach

updated Nov 2023

Approach

Yokkaichi Ko is approached from the S through Ise Wan and entered via the dredged channels leading from the head of the inlet.

Draught limitation in the channel is 12.0m.

No 1 Fairway, dredged to 12.0m, leads through the harbour entrance into No 1 Area, which is dredged to between 8.8-13.4m, extending from the S end of the harbour to a position 0.5nm N of Torisana Hana. Umaokosi Fairway, dredged to 11.6m, leads NNW from the W end of No 1 Fairway and SW of East Breakwater.

No 2 Fairway, a buoyed channel dredged to 14.0m, leads into Kasumiga Ura, N of the N end of East Breakwater.

Another buoyed channel, dredged to 12.0m, leads to the N side of the reclaimed land in Kasumiga Ura. A further buoyed channel, dredged to 7.5m, leads to berths on the NW side of Kasumiga Ura. A light is exhibited from a white tower at the head of a breakwater which extends 350m ENE from the N extremity of Kasumiga Ura.

Port limits

The port limit is bounded by a line extending approx 3.8nm E from a position close S of Yoshi Saki (34°54.5'N 136°38.8'E), then NNE passing E of Showa Yokkaichi Sea-Berth (34°55.8'N 136°42.1'E), then E of Cosmo Sea-Berth, then to the vicinity of a lightbuoy (34°58.6'N 136°43.3'E), then generally NNW to the W side of the mouth of Machiya Kawa.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Vessels carrying dangerous cargo intending to navigate the Irago Suido Traffic Roust should report 3 hours in advance.

Anchorages

A quarantine anchorage in depths of 15.0m, mud, lies 1.5nm SSE of the entrance to No 1 Fairway.

East Anchorage lies E of East Breakwater and is bounded by a line drawn from East Breakwater N Light, 101° for 1,170m, then 207.2° for 1,094m, then to East Breakwater S Light. The holding is reported to be good.

West Anchorage lies W of East Breakwater and is bounded by a line drawn from East Breakwater S Light 285° for 200m, then 334° for 1,080m, then 107° for 520m then to East Breakwater N Light.

A swell gauge, marked by a lightbuoy, lies on the seabed 1.15nm SE of East Breakwater S Head. A submarine cable connects the gauge to East Breakwater S Head. Tankers waiting to berth at the sea berths should anchor 1.5nm E of the quarantine anchorage.

There is a dangerous cargo anchorage in No 2 Area.
