Tides

Range 0.3m. Tidal streams during settled weather change regularly in Masnedsund and may attain a rate of 3-4kts. In unsettled weather they are irregular and the current then predominates, sometimes running in the same directions for several consecutive days.

Gales from between W and NW cause an E going current and those from between the E and SE give rise to a W going current. The rate in these circumstances may be as much as 5kts.

Approach

updated Apr 2019

Approach

The port has recently undergone substantial expansion, included enlargement of the harbour area and the dredging of the fairway down to a depth of 10.4m with a width of 70m.

Approaches: A channel leads between the coastal bank of Sjaelland and Masnedo NW Flak, which shoal ground would otherwise bar the NW entrance to Masnedsund.

The alignment of Masnedsund Leading Lights (113.5°) leads ESE from a position about 0.3nm ESE of Masnedsundbroen close NNE of Masnedo E flak, a large area of weed and stones forming the S side of the sound, marked by buoys (starboard hand). The deepest part of the passage, lying close N of this alignment, leads ESE through the E part of Masnedsundfor about 1.5nm, passing SSW of Flyndergrund (0.5nm ESE of Masnedsundbroen), a spit, marked by a buoy (port hand), and Trellegrund, the steep to coastal bank on the SE side of Oringe Pynt (54°59.8'N 011°55.2'E).

From a position about 1.5nm ESE of Masnedsundbroen, the track leads through Faergestrom, a short section of channel, not less then 0.1nm in width, leading SE for about 1.25nm between Kirkegrund, the steep to coastal bank off Sjaelland, and the flat connecting Masendo with Faro (54°57'N 012°00'E).

From a position about 2.8nm ESE of Masnedsundbroen, at the junction with a side channel leading SE to join Kalvestrom, the track leads E for about 1.0nm through Ny Farvand, a very narrow channel, passing N of Skippergrund and S of Kirkegrund, marked on both sides by buoys (lateral).

From a position in Faergestrom about 2.0nm SE of Masnedsundbroen (55°00'N 011°54'E), the track leads N for about 0.6nm, passing (positions from Masnedsundbroen):

E of a wreck (1.7nm ESE) at the SE extremity of Trellegrund, marked by a buoy (E cardinal) moored 0.25nm SE. Then W of a 1.9m patch (2.2nm ESE) on Kirkegrund, marked by a buoy (starboard hand). Then W of Snekkeo (2.1nm E), a rocky spit, marked by a buoy (starboard hand) and E of 2m patch (1.9nm E), marked by a buoy (port hand).

The alignment of Vordingborg West Leading Lights (308°) leads NW from close W of Snekkeo for about 1.25nm through the dredged channel approaching the West Harbour, marked by a pair of buoys (lateral) at the SE end of the channel, and then by buoys (port hand) to the harbour, passing between Trellegrund and the coastal bank off Sjaelland.

Anchorages

Anchorage is available off the entrance channel.

Anchoring is prohibited in the entrance to Vordinborg Nordhavn between the submarine pipeline and a line bearing 022° indicated by a pair of beacons on the N shore 0.22nm NE of the pipeline.

Anchorage is prohibited within a distance of approx 0.15nm on either side of the bridge.

Restrictions

Submarine cables are laid across Masnedsund, within close vicinity of either side of the bridge, beacons on Masnedo mark the positions of these cables.

A submarine pipeline carrying water is laid across the harbour approx 0.15nm SE of the quay, the pipeline is marked by a pair of beacons, each with a yellow diamond topmark on the SW shore, in line they bear 222°.

A high tension cable with an overhead clearance of 36m above mean water level spans the Masnedsund, approx 0.3nm W of the bridge.

Tugs

There is 1 x 300bhp tug available.
