Approach

updated Mar 2019

Approach

Svendborgsund is a narrow tortuous fairway, approx 7nm in length with a depth of 6.9m, between the S shore of Fyn and the NW coast of Taasinge (55°00.0'N 010°36.0'E) and Thuro (55°03.0'N 010°40.0'E). The channel passes between, steep banks on both sides, and is well marked by buoys and leading lights. It can be entered either from the E at Thuroe Rev or from the W at Lehnskov.

Vessels transiting the sound should pay attention to the fact that the side marking changes at Svendborg.

The directions from the W are as follows: From a position 0.4nm S of Lehnskov Pynt (55°02.0'N 010°31.0'E) the track leads ENE in the white sector (058.5°-060.5°) of Saint Jorgens Light for 2.0nm, passing NNW of a detached 5.6m shoal, then NNW of Iholm Vasterron, a bank marked by a buoy (starboard hand), extending SW from Iholm, an islet, 5m in height. Then NNW of Iholm Flak), close NW of Iholm, marked by a buoy (starboard hand) Then Tankefuld, Bratten W, Vindebyore and Bratten E Leading Lights mark the fairway as far a the harbour.

The directions from the E are as follows: The E approach to Svendborg Sund presents no difficulty. Bregninge Church in line with Valdermarsslot, bearing approx 273° leads S of Thuro in a least depth of 8.7m, to the alignment of Tasinge Leading Light structures, from where Thuro W, Grasten W, Kristiansminde N, Sudame and Kristiansminde E light structures as detailed below, mark the fairway in that order as far as Svendborg Havn.

Caution: The alignment of Kristiansminde N Leading Light structures pass over the edge of the bank in a depth of less than 5.5m on the W side of the fairway, approx 0.5nm NW of Marodde and also near the bank on the E side, approx 0.5nm S of the front structure, in view of this it is advisable to use a pilot.

Anchorages

Outside the E entrance of Svendborg Sund, there is anchorage between Thuro and Stenodde, the S entrance point of Lunke Bugt, 2nm SE of Valdemarsslot, the depths are from 7-11m, soft bottom. Lunke Bugt is otherwise shoal. Off Stenoddle a buoy moored approx 0.3nm NE of it marks the edge of a rocky reef extending NE from the shore.

Within Svendborg Sund anchorage can be obtained in Eghaven, situated on the coastal bank which extends from the W side of Staerodde, in a position approx 0.3nm NE of Tasinge Front Leading Light structure, also near Troense and on Oreflak, the bank which extends N from Orodde, the NE extremity of Tasinge.

Restrictions

Svendborg Bridge crosses the sound 1nm SW of the harbour, the vertical height is 33m MWL, under the centre 50m of the navigable span. Total navigable width 80m. The N and S piers of the navigable span, Nos 11 and 12 respectively, are protected by sunken caissons, which extend 25m in the direction of the fairway on each side.

Speed is restricted to a maximum of 6-7kts when approaching and negotiating the bridge.

At night, a red light is exhibited on either side of Pier No 11, and a green light on either side of Pier No 12.The sunken caissons are marked similarly. Both piers are floodlit.

Harbour speed is limited to a maximum of 4kts.
