Approach

Approach

There are 2 approach channels to Scalloway. North and South Channels, which are cleared and marked by lights.

South Channel which leads between the N end of West Burra and the islands of Oxna and Papa (respectively 0.7nm NW and 0.7nm N of Fugla Ness), (60°06.4'N 001°20.7'W). This approach is frequently used in good weather and during strong N winds.

North Channel which passes N around Hildasay. This is the preferred approach to Scalloway.

S Channel: From a position about 1.0nm WSW of Fugla Ness (60°06.4'N 001°20.7'W), leads through the outer part of South Channel. The sea invariably breaks over Hellia Baa and in SW gales sometimes over the whole of the passage between Fugla Ness and Bullia Skerry. In these conditions small craft may pass NW of Bullia Skerry; larger vessels should use N Channel. The track deviates from the leading bearing in order to pass between Green Holm and Merry Holm, this channel although narrow, is marked on one side by light-buoys (one port and one starboard hand) and has a least depth of 11.0m in the fairway.

N channel: Approach: From a position about 1nm SE of Skelda Ness (60°09.0'N 001°27.0'W), N Havra Light, bearing approx 057° (at night a white sector 053.5°-060.5° of the light) leads NE passing SE of Braga then NW of Cheynies, then SE of Sanda Stour. Then NW of Hildasay, when about 0.5nm SW of North Havra the Point of the Pund Light bearing approx 137° (at night a white sector (135°-140°) of the light) leads SE passing NE of Hildsay then SW of Hildsay Lightbuoy (S cardinal) marking an isolated shoal with a depth over it of 6.9m. Then NE of Langa, a narrow islet, then SW of Burwick Holm. From about abreast Berwick Holm the track leads SSE with North Havra Light bearing about 336° astern (at night in a white sector 334°-337.5°), passing ENE of Whaleback Skerry which is marked 0.5nm N by a lightbuoy (N cardinal), then mid-channel between Point of the Pund, the N entrance point of Scalloway Harbour and Skervie Skerry, grass-covered and surrounded by a narrow shallow bank.

Directions for entering harbour: From a position about 0.2nm S of Point of the Pund Light the track leads E passing in mid-channel S of Maa Ness the S extremity of Ness Westshore. When close S of a lightbuoy (port hand) (0.5nm ESE of Point of Pund), moored on the S edge of a shallow bank extending nearly 0.1nm from the SE part of the Ness of Westshore, the white sector (063.5°-065.5°) of Scalloway Harbour Direction Light (grey metal post, height 8m) (1.75nm SSW of Scalloway Castle), which is exhibited by day and at night, leads ENE to the anchorage and Black Ness. The track passes between a lightbuoy (starboard hand), marking the 5.0m depth contour bordering the S shore and a lightbuoy (port hand) marking the S edge of a 4.6m shoal 0.8nm SE of Port Arthur.

Two lightbuoys (both starboard hand) (0.2nm SSW and 0.15nm SSE of the castle respectively) mark the 6.0m depth contour on the S side of the harbour abreast the quays on Black Ness.

Port limits

The port limits are E of a line joining Maa Ness (60°07.9'N 001°17.7'W), with Trondra Ness (60°07.9'N 001°17.7'W). The S limit is Clift Bridge (0.7nm W of Tondra Ness).

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
