Approach

updated May 2026

Approach

Rosyth is approached from E via the River Forth and then through Main Channel.

The approach channel, dredged to a depth of 8.8m below CD is 1.1nm long and extends in a direction 323.30° via leading lights from a position close E of Beamer Rock Lighthouse (Fl 3s 6m 9M) to a point midway between channel Buoys No 3 and 4 then in a direction 295° via leading lights to a point between channel Buoys No 5 and 6.

Caution: Due to silting, depths of up to 0.6m less than the charted maintained depths may exist and naval vessels may be encountered within the port area.

Port limits

The limits of the Dockyard port of Rosyth stretch from close E of Oxcars to 4nm W of Rosyth.

Anchorages

There are a number of anchorages for warships, R1 to R7, which lie to the S and W of Rosyth. Eddies to the W of Breamer Rock during W going spring tides cause a vessel to sheer considerably if anchored within 0.7nm W of the rock.

Charlestown road anchorage for merchant vessels, which also included anchor berths R5, R6, R7 (above), lies in the fairway off Charlestown and Limekilns. Applications for use of Romeo (R) anchorages should be made through Forth Navigation Service.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
