Approach

updated Apr 2017

Approach

From a position 1.5nm ENE of Vriskaig Point (57°24.5'N 006°10.9'W) the approach to Portree Harbour leads WSW for 1.25nm, with Vriskaig Point ahead, after passing Sgeir Mhor the track alters WNW towards the pier, 0.3nm NW of Vriskaig Point.

Port limits

All water below the level of HW enclosed by a line joining a point 100m NW of Udairn (57°24'N 006°08'W), on the S side of the harbour, to a point on the coast 1.25nm NNW in position (57°25.5'N 006°09.0'W).

Anchorages

Anchorage, with good holding ground, may be obtained in depths of 25.0m with the head of Portree Pier bearing 278°, 0.7nm, clear of a sewage outfall pipe, which extends 0.55nm E from Stron a'Mhill, the SE extremity of Meall na h-Acairseid.

Anchorage can also be obtained E of the pierhead in a depth of 5.0m but the holding, in soft mud, is not very good and moorings are laid in this area. In strong SW winds this anchorage can be very uncomfortable and good shelter can then be obtained in Camas Ban, 0.6nm SE of the pier, off sandy beach SE of Vriskaig Point, in a depth of 4.0-6.0m. However, the anchorage in Camas Ban is subject to severe downdrafts in S winds.

RSO - Security Consultant Services: Transec for passenger vessels. MCA for other vessels.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
