Approach

updated Feb 2016

Approach

Approaches to the NE entrance to Menai Strait lie on the W side of Conwy Bay near the Anglesey shore. The NW entrance channel should be used.

At the entrance to the NW Channel a bar, consisting of a rocky patch which connects the coast 0.15nm S of Trwyn-du Light with the drying spit extending SSE from Perch Rock, has a least depth of 4.0m over it. An inner bar, 0.3nm S, which lies between a patch of deep water and Outer Road, has a least depth of 2.8m. Then follow the buoyed channel to Bangor Pier.

When at the inner pilot boarding station off Bangor New Pier follow the channel across Bangor Flats (SW extension of Lavan Sands) to the entrance of the dock.

Port limits

Port limits are 0.5nm N of Port Penrhyn.

Anchorages

Outer Road (53°18.0'N 004°12.0'W), lies between B2 and B1 Lightbuoys, and below the Pool, an area of deep water, and is well protected by the banks lying to seaward. The best anchorage is 0.4nm E from Penmon Point (53°18.0'N 004°03.0'W) in depths of 3.0 to 5.5m, sand and shell.

Vessels awaiting a berth usually anchor outside of the NW entrance in open water.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
