Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

Draught limitation in the channel is 15.3m for Toho Oil Dolphin.

Large vessels entering Owase Ko, normally pass between Nage Ishi, and Warigami Shima.

Port limits

The harbour limit is a line joining Moto Hana to the S extremity of Sabaru Shima, the NW extremity of Sabaru Shima to Naga Ishi, and Naga Ishi to Ino Hana.

Anchorages

Owase Ko affords anchorage to large vessels, but the islets in its approach do not give much protection during winds from between E and SE which send in a swell; the worst period is in Aug and Sep.

A good anchorage can be obtained in a position 0.45nm SWW of Suzume Shima, 16m high, which lies at the extremity of a shallow spit extending approx 400m S from the N shore of the harbour.

Vessels should anchor at least 400m clear of Toho Sekiyu Jetty situated in the SW part of the harbour, and also clear of the entrance to the inner harbour.

Small vessels up to 300t can anchor inside the breakwater at the inner end of the harbour, in depths from 3.0-8.0m.

Restrictions

Tankers are not permitted to enter or leave Owase Ko at night.

Caution: A submarine power cable is laid across the entrance to the harbour. Caution is necessary when entering or leaving harbour as the breakwaters are high and it is difficult to see the movement of shipping.

Tugs

Tugs available from Ise and Osaka.
