Anchorages

Anchorage, well sheltered from N winds, can be obtained by small vessels with local knowledge in depths of 12.0-14.0m, sand and coral, SW of El-Qarnus.

Care must be taken to avoid several coral reefs with depths of less than 0.6m over them, which lie in the W part of this roadstead.

This anchorage is not good in S winds as there is not sufficient swinging room and the bottom shelves steeply. Local knowledge is required for the use of this anchorage.

Anchorage may also be obtained S of El Hibiq (28°52'N 034°39'E) with shelter from N winds, but this anchorage is only recommended for very small vessels which could lie within 0.1nm of the shore in bad weather. Good shelter can only be obtained close inshore as both the N wind and the swell, follow the contour of the land around the point.

Somewhat larger vessels may obtain anchorage in a depth of 33m, sand and coral, approx 0.15nm offshore with the E extremity of El Hibiq bearing 051°, 0.4nm distant. When approaching this anchorage berth care must be taken to avoid the foul ground which lies approx 1nm farther S.

Tugs

There is 1 tug with a capacity of 1,800hp available, with fire fighting capabilities.
