  1. Mostyn / River Dee boarding — outer Pilot boards53°22.5′N 003°33.3′W

Compulsory for all vessels over LOA 20m or carrying dangerous cargoes bound for Mostyn or River Dee. Vessels should advise their ETA and draught at the North Rhyl anchorage area at least 24 hours prior to arrival.

Mostyn Dock pilots usually board near Dee Light Buoy (53°22.0'N 003°18.7'W) for vessels LOA 20-90m. For vessels greater than LOA 90m and where the master has no previous experience of the approaches to Mostyn, the pilot will board at the outer boarding position off North Rhyl (53°22.5'N 003°33.3'W).

Vessels should contact the Harbour Master on arrival at the North Rhyl anchorage confirming vessel's draught.

All vessels bound for the Port of Mostyn should wait, or anchor in the North Ryle anchorage area until such time as specified by the Harbour Master to proceed to the pilot boarding position.

Approach

updated Sep 2014

Approach

From the pilot boarding area, off Dee Lightbuoy (53°22.0'N 003°18.7'W), to the entrance to Mostyn Docks, the track leads 3nm SE through Wild Road, and Mostyn Deep. The track continues S and SSE through the buoyed channel into the turning basin.

The line of bearing of 177.2° in the white sector (176.7° to 177.7°) of the PEL Light (53°19.3'N 003°16.1'W) (orange painted shed) leads through the initial S section of the dredged channel to Mostyn Docks

Caution: Mostyn and M2, M3 and M4 Lightbuoys are periodically moved to conform with the movements of the banks, they may not therefore be in the charted positions.

M4 Buoy marks the W side of Salisbury Bank.

Port limits

The port limits cover a small square area enclosing the approach channel, training walls and new berth.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
