Approach
updated Apr 2026Approach
Mormugao Bay is entered between Mormugao Point (14°25.0'N 073°54.0'E) and Cabo Rajniwas, 3nm N. The port, including its inner anchorage, is approached through a buoyed channel which passes close N of Mormugao Head.
There is no separate fairway buoy. The entrance to the channel is marked by green and red buoys, situated approx 3.6nm W of the breakwater. The approach channel berth is marked by lighted buoys, positioned approx 25m outside the charted channel limits. The length of the channel is 4nm; width 250m and depth 14.4m below LWS.
The alongside berthing area, protected by a breakwater and a mole at its W end, is situated on the NE side of Mormugao Head. There is a turning basin, for vessels using the deep water berths, enclosed within the dredged area about 0.6nm ESE of the breakwater head.
Traffic schemes and VTS
A VTMS is in operation which controls traffic in the approaches. Vessels should contact VTMS callsign "Goa Port" when 12nm from breakwater.
Anchorages
Prohibited anchorages: A prohibited anchorage is established between Searle Patch (15°27.0'N 073°48.0'E), approx 1.0nm SW of Amee Shaols and the W end of Saint George's Islands (15°21.0'N 073°46.0'E).
Anchoring is also prohibited approx 0.5nm and 1.3nm SE of Pikene Island due to the existence of concrete piles and underwater sensors. Underwater obstructions, which may protrude up to 0.5m from the seabed exist within this area and any vessel damaging these could face an immediate hazard.
Tugs
The port has 2 x 45t bollard pull VST fire fighting tugs and 1 x 50t bollard pull tug.
Mooring
Vessels are generally berthed port side alongside berths in the order of arrival. However, ousting priorities are provided for container and passenger vessels, provided that 24 hours notice of arrival is given in addition to the general notice. At Berths No 10 and 11, the berthing is usually starboard side alongside except in cases of passenger ships and container vessels arriving in the daytime and leaving at night time. Number of tugs used depends on the type and size of ships. There is no separate charge for tugs for berthing/unberthing operations.
