King's Lynn is approached from the Wash through Bull Dog Channel, entered about 4nm SSE of Roaring Middle Light Float (52°58'N 0°21'E) which leads to Lynn Cut. The approach is navigable by sea going vessels from 2hrs before HW to 2hrs after HW.

From pilot boarding area position, E of Light Buoy No. 1 (52°56.0'N 000°21.7'E), the channel leads 2nm S'ly to entrance of Bull Dog Channel (No 5 E cardinal by 52°54.2'N 000°23.4'E) then SSW'ly and S'ly 4nm towards Lynn Cut. The channel leading to Lynn Cut is marked by lightbuoys which are subject to frequent change as the channel itself changes. The final 2.5nm of the channel is bounded on the W side by a training wall marked at its N end by West Stones Light Beacon (N cardinal) and at its S end by West Bank Light Beacon (yellow pile, tide gauge, 10m in height) (52°47'N 000°22'E). The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
