updated Jun 2025

Approach

Fairway Lightbuoy (port hand) (17°00.15'N 082°20.47'E) moored about 3.5nm ESE of Vakalapudi Light marks the seaward end of the approach channel.

Ten channel lightbuoys for marking the approach channel and for making the anchorage. Approach channel to the Deep Water Port is 7km length with a minimum dredged depth of 12.5m. It has bottom width of 125m and a turning circle of 350m diameter, dredged to 12.5m. From the turning circle the track leads W for about 1nm to the berths. Maximum permitted draught 11.5m at High Water.

Leading beacons are situated about 2.8nm SW of Godavari Point:

Front beacon 2.5nm SW of Godavari Point.

Rear beacon 900m SW of the front beacon.

The alignment, 230°, of these beacons lead through the channel.

Lighterage port: The mouth of Kakinada River has been formed into a canal by two groynes. A light is exhibited from a grey metal framework near the head of the NW groyne. The canal is 76m wide with an average dredged depth of 2.1m and it enables lighters to operate at all times between the wharves in the town and the anchorages.

A boat harbour projects S from a breakwater which extends 0.5nm E from a position on the shore 1.75nm S of Vakalapudi Light. A light is exhibited from the S end of the E short jetty.

Anchorages

Anchorage on the bar E of Vakalapudi Light is subject to considerable ground swell from SE, even when there is no wind.

Anchorage Port: Anchorage may be obtained 2.25nm ESE of Vakalapudi Light in depths of approx 9.0m. Safe anchorage may be obtained 3.25nm SE of Vakalapudi Light in depths of approx 6.0m. There is very little tidal stream at these anchorages.

STS Lighterage area: M 1 anchorage designated for lighterage operations has been established approx 7.5nm ESE of Godavari Point, radius 1nm and centred on 16°57.0'N 082°27.0'E.

STS waiting area: A designated anchorage for vessels awaiting lighterage operations lies approx 3nm NW of the transhipment area, centred on 16°59.5'N 082°25.3'E.

Vessels not engaged in lighterage operations should keep well clear of the area.
