Approach

updated Apr 2021

Approach

Access to the harbour from the Aegean Sea is through Izmir Inlet where depths range from 45-73m. Radar may be the most reliable means to fix a ship's position in the inlet. Significant differences may exist between actual depth soundings and the charted depths between the seaward approach and the middle harbour anchorage in Izmir Bay. Depths may vary by 1.8-2.4m at Pelikan Bank; by 1.8-3.6m in the vicinity of Yenikale, and 3.6-5.4m inside the middle harbour anchorage area. Significant dangers lie adjacent to the channel; merchant ships have gone aground in the vicinity of Pelikan Bank because of failure to use proper vigilance and all navigational aids available. Caution should be exercised when transiting near Yenikale. The channel, marked by two buoys, is approx 274m wide at the buoys, decreasing to 182m E of the buoys. Caution should also be exercised near Cakal Burnu (point) by giving it a wide berth.

Inner Port: All vessels entering and leaving the harbour must use the N entrance which is about 78m wide with a depth in the fairway of 11.4m, however liberty boats may use the southern entrance when going to/from the inner harbour's fleet landing.

Alsancak Port: The port, to the NE of the Inner Port, is approached by making for a position 0.6nm NW of Daragac Burnu, from this position an unmarked channel leads E to the head of the pier. The channel is dredged to a depth of 12.0m over a width of 150m.

Port limits

The port lies E of a line drawn from Saz Burnu to the head of Goztepe Koyu (3.5nm SSW). It is divided into outer, middle and inner harbours.

Anchorages

Outer harbour: Anchoring without permission is allowed in the part of Goztepe Koyu lying within the limit of the outer harbour. A vessel's position must be reported to the Port Authority immediately after anchoring.

Middle harbour: Good anchorage in depths from 14.0-17.0m can be obtained from 0.3-0.6nm W-WSW of the detached breakwater of Izmir inner port (38°25.7'N 027°07.9'E).

Prohibited anchorage: Near a submarine cable laid from the S end of detached breakwater of Izmir inner port to the shore 0.5nm SSW.

Near submarine cables laid across the E end of Izmir Limani from a position approx 0.5nm SW of Daragac Burnu to Naldoken Burnu approx 1.5nm NNW. Beacons (black and white inverted anchor) mark the landing points of the NE cable.

Anchoring and fishing are also prohibited in an area between Saz Burnu (38°27.5'N 027°05.5'E) and Goztepe Koyu (3.5nm SSW) in which submarine power cables are laid.

Restrictions

Docking of ships at the old port is not permitted during the night, but ships can leave the port at any time. At Alsancak there are no restrictions to berthing/unberthing.

The old port length is restricted to 165m maximum draught 8.0m.

Vessels carrying explosives or flammable materials above 60°C are prohibited from entering either the Inner or Middle Harbours.

Vessels carrying explosives or flammable materials below 60°C are required to anchor in the explosives anchorage.

Shifting berth: Only vessels anchored in the outer harbour may shift berth without prior permission from the Port Authority. Any vessel compelled to shift berth must report the new berth immediately, stating the reason for moving.

Tugs

Not necessary for vessels up to 2,000GT, one tug is compulsory for vessels of more than 2,000GT, two tugs are compulsory for vessels of more than 4,000GT. Towage is provided by the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). Five tugs available up to 34t bollard pull.

Mooring

Mooring boats instruct and assist vessel in berthing. The mooring boats display a white with a red anchor pendant.
