Approach
updated Apr 2023Approach
When approaching Iskenderun from W, especially at night, the SW entrance point of the bay should be given a wide berth as the bottom rises steeply off it and the distance from the coast is very difficult to estimate due to the high land beyond.
Anchorages
The usual anchorage is N of the town, approx 0.3nm offshore, in a depth of 13.0m, mud.
A good anchor berth is 0.8nm WSW of the W main breakwater light, in a depth of approx 16.0m, stiff mud, but the holding generally is not good. Winds from N are seldom so strong as to cause vessels with good anchors and cables to drag.
The anchorage for vessels carrying explosives is within a triangular area, 1nm NW of the W main breakwater head.
Anchoring is prohibited within the inner harbour and close to the shore NE of the inner harbour.
Restrictions
Vessels carrying in excess of 50t of explosives are not allowed to berth.
No restrictions in Orhan Ekinci Pier and Yazici Jetty.
Prohibited area: A maritime military security area is located 2.25nm WSW from the harbour entrance, close N of Iskenderun Airport. The area parallels the coast for 0.2nm and extends 0.05nm from the shore; entry is prohibited.
Tugs
Towage is provided by the Port Administration, five tugs (970hp - 2620hp) are available. Vessels over 500GT and above berthing or un-berthing from jetties and piers must take one tug, vessels of 4,000GT and above require two tugs.
Mooring
Buoy Mooring arrangements: Vessels will drop two anchors ford then connect to sea buoys aft by mooring lines from starboard, centre and port side.
