Pilot

updated May 2018

Compulsory. The port of Immingham is included in The Humber pilotage area. Humber Pilotage Control and Vessel Traffic Services, Humber, are combined in a single centre based at Spurn Point. This centre organises all Operational Marine Functions.

Pilot orders for both inbound and outbound passages must be given using "AGENTS ONLINE" via internet which can be accessed using the website www.abpnotify.co.ukOrders.

VHF Ch 13 is the Intership Channel for the Humber Approaches and is used for communications between Pilot Vessels and for vessels boarding and landing Pilots.

For inbound vessels (from the sea), notice must be given at least 12 hours in advance to VTS Humber, with an ETA at the seward limit of the Humber Pilotage Area.

ETA at the Alpha Light Buoy should be confirmed no later than two and a half hours before arrival on VHF Ch 14. This two and a half hour notice is required under all circumstances and is not dependent on the availability or otherwise of a berth or a confirmed berthing time.

(A charge will be levied if an order for an authorised pilot is cancelled after the pilot has been called to attend the vessel).

Pilot Boarding Positions:

1. Deep-draught vessels (53° 39'.8N 0°22'.0E):

This position, 1.25nm NNE of Humber Light Float, applies to very large vessels (40,000DWT and over and vessels with a draught of 11.0m, gas carriers of over 20,000m³ capacity and over) and is used both for embarkation and disembarkation. These vessels may also be boarded in the Deep Water Anchorage.

2. (53°33'.3N 0°15'.0E): This position, about 0.5nm SE of Spurn Light Float, is the main boarding position for all inbound vessels except Very Large Ships and other large or complex vessels.

3. (53° 34'.4N 0° 16'.5E): This position, in the vicinity of S Binks Light Buoy, is the boarding position for large or complex vessels inbound via New Sand Hole TSS.

Approach

updated Jun 2024

Approach

From the River Humber, the access to Immingham Dock is through an entrance lock which is approached between Eastern and Western jetties. The entrance lock has a length of 256.2m, width 27.4m and there is a depth over the inner sill of 11.3m at MHWS and 9.7m at MHWN. The lock has 3 pairs of gates, which can divide it into an outer part 96m length and an inner part 160m length. The lock can be entered at any state of the tide. Depths in the entrance to Immingham Dock vary. Vessels of up to 10.36m draught in water density of 1017 accommodated in the wet dock.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Routeing measures are established in the approaches to the River Humber and include a number of TSS and Precautionary areas. Traffic Lanes are marked by lightbuoys, light floats and light vessels. Approach and departure lanes from and to the NE, E and SE intersect in a Precautionary Area, centred 5nm ESE of Spurn Head. A single TSS leads W and NW into the Humber.

Inbound vessels should not enter the river past Spurn Lightfloat without first obtaining permission from VTS Humber. Vessels should then proceed in accordance with entry and berthing instructions provided by Immingham Port Control.

Oil Terminal, Bulk and Gas Terminals: Any vessel on a Humber Passage Plan (any vessel of 40,000DWT or over, whether laden, part laden, or light, or with a draught of 11m or over and Gas Carriers of 20,000m³ capacity and above irrespective of draught) should board two pilots at Humber Lightbuoy and should report to VTS Humber on VHF Ch 12 when passing the Reporting Points listed in the Humber Passage Plan booklet.

Anchorages

Large vessels awaiting a pilot should anchor in the deep water anchorage centred 3.5nm SE of Humber Light vessel. The limits of the anchorage, which contains 3 designated anchor berths, are marked by 4 light buoys (cardinal). Local experience indicates that on occasions the actual tidal stream considerably exceeds the predicted rate. Vessels anchoring in this area, on occasions when there are fast tidal streams should keep well clear of other anchored vessels and buoys.

Caution: Vessels anchored in this area have been known to drag anchor in a N direction at a rate of 2kts towards and over gas pipelines situated 4nm N.

Restrictions

The lock entrance is 256.2m length and 27.4m width.

Dangerous cargo vessels will not be berthed/unberthed in wind speeds over 40kts or visibility less than 0.5nm. Vessels carrying a dangerous substance in bulk or in ballast not gasfree are prohibited movement in visibility of 0.5nm.

Tugs

If insufficient tugs are available, the vessel will not be allowed to proceed up river.

ASSOCIATED PETROLEUM TERMINALS (APT):

APT may also require standby tug(s) and pilot to be in attendance whilst a vessel is at the berth. Standby tugs will normally moor at the East or Western Jetty, subject to weather conditions.

A safety tug is on station outside Immingham Dock. The tug listens on VHF Ch 69, 12, 16 and 68.

Mooring

EAST TERMINAL - EASTERN JETTY: The vessel is to remain moored in accordance with the instructions made by the Port Authority. The Master must ensure mixed mooring types are not used on the same lead and all moorings and mooring equipment must be in good condition.

Moorings must be properly tended throughout to prevent the vessel moving off the jetty fenders and to prevent the vessel surging on the berth. Each mooring must be adjusted to ensure equal weight is taken on each rope. Adjustment of moorings should take place on slack water.

Power for the adjustment of moorings must be available throughout the period of stay alongside.

Automatic tension systems must not be left in automatic and manual brakes to be fully applied.

ASSOCIATED PETROLEUM TERMINALS (APT):

Two Assistant Mooring Masters will board vessels 100,000DWT and over from a tug at Buoy No 63A to assist in arrangement of moorings fore and aft. (An exception to this will be for vessels which are regularly at the terminal and which the Marine Controller deems not necessary).

In addition, vessels between 60,000DWT and 99,999DWT on their first visit to the terminal (and subsequent visits if deemed necessary by the Marine Controller) may also be required to place onboard Assistant Mooring Masters.

In the event of mooring launches being unable to operate in adverse weather conditions, ship mooring may be carried out using shore messenger ropes with agreement between the Master/Pilot and APT Berthing Master.

RSO - Security Consultant Services: Transec for passenger vessels. MCA for other vessels.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
