Not compulsory. Pilots, when required, are available at the quarantine anchorage. Pilot comes by a tug flying a pilot flag ("H"), but the tug is unable to communicate directly with the vessel. Therefore vessel must constantly keep close communication with agent. When vessel approaches Hachinohe, VHF Ch 16 (callsign "Shiogama Hoan") belonging to 2nd Regional Maritime Safety Headquarters, is available to notify agent and pilot through Hachinohe Harbour Master.

Approach

updated Dec 2024

Approach

From E or S, the recommended track leads, from a position 1.5nm N of Same Kado Light, 240° on the power station chimney (40°31.9'N 141°30.6'E), to the pilot boarding place.

From the N, the recommended track leads towards Hashikami Take (40°24.0'N 141°35.0'E) bearing 180° to a position 2nm NNE of Same Kado Light, then towards the power station chimney bearing 240° as previous.

Draught limitation in the channel is 12.0m LW.

The channel between the E extremity of Hattaro North Breakwater and Middle Breakwater, 0.3nm E, has been dredged to 14.0m.

Port limits

The harbour limits are bounded by a line drawn from the shore at O Saki N for 0.175nm to Hinode Iwa, then 320° for 2.1nm, then W for 1.4nm to the shore.

Anchorages

Quarantine anchorage: A quarantine anchorage is established 1.5nm N of North Breakwater Light.

Inner anchorage: Good anchorage is obtainable in depths of approx 7m, fine sand, good holding, approx 0.2nm S of the centre of West Breakwater.

The holding ground is good on the S side of North Breakwater, but swinging room is limited and during strong N winds the seas overrun this breakwater.

Restrictions

Vertical clearances: Hachinohe Seagull Bridge, between Kawaragi No 1 Wharf and the petroleum base lying close SW, has a vertical clearance of between 4.5-5.5m.

Hachinohe O Hashi Bridge, at the mouth of Niida Kawa, has a vertical clearance of 31m.

A power cable, with a safe overhead clearance of 12m spans the passage between the E extremity of Shirogane North Breakwater and Kabu Shima, 0.05nm E.

Tugs

There are 5 tugs available. Vessels over 6,000GT required to use 2 tugs.
