The entrance to the port lies over a bar, at the mouth of Uppanar River, and is usually open throughout the year; it has a min depth of 1.2m. The entrance channel shifts its position continually, moving N during the SW monsoon and S during the NE monsoon.
A 256m long jetty lies on the N side of the entrance channel and a breakwater arm 104m long lies on the S side.
Port limits
The limits of the port of Cuddalore are defined by conspicuous white boundary pillars, about 9.0m high, one standing 1.75nm SSW and the other 1.5nm NNE of Cuddalore Lighthouse.
Anchorages
The best anchorage is in a depth of 11.0m with Cuddalore Lighthouse (11°42.3'N 079°46.6'E) bearing about 290° and 0.75nm to 1nm offshore. An anchor boat will indicate the approx position in which vessels may anchor. An anchorage for vessels carrying dangerous goods is situated 2.5nm E of the S breakwater.
Restrictions
Anchorage is also available in 12.0m of water, 1.5nm offshore. Cuddalore is at the southern branch of the Ponnair River. Only craft up to 2.4m draught can enter the river at HW.
