Approach
updated Mar 2017Approach
Approach and entry: Campbeltown Loch is approached from the S end of Kilbrannan Sound (55°27'N 005°25'W) and the light on Island Davaar, 0.45nm SSE.
Entrance channel: Initial position, 1.25nm NE of Island Davaar Light.
Kilkerran Leading Lights: Front light (red triangle, point up, on a beacon 6.0m in height) (55°25.0'N 005°35.3'W).
Rear light (red triangle, point down, on a beacon 7.0m in height), 250m from the front light.
The alignment (240.25°) of these lights, the daymarks of which are difficult to distinguish, leads WSW in mid channel towards and through the entrance, passing (with positions from Island Davaar Light):
SSE of Otterard Rock (1.5nm NNE) which is marked on its E side by a lightbuoy (E cardinal), then:
SSE of a bank, with depths of less than 10.0m, which extends 0.2nm SSE from Long Rock (1.25nm N), the E drying rocks lying off Smerby Rocks, which is marked off its SE end by a buoy (port hand). Then SSE of a detached rock, with a depth of 3.9m over it (0.45nm NNW), which lies 0.1nm SE of Yellow Rocks, at the S end of Kilchousland Bay which is bordered by a drying reef and bank which, with depths of less than 5.0m over it, extends up to 0.25nm offshore. A detached rock, with a depth of 1.9m over it (0.6nm NNW), lies off the bank. Then:
NNW of the reef fringing the NW side of Island Davaar which is rocky on its N side, and: SSE of the foul ground which extends 0.075nm SE from Macringan's Point (0.5nm NW) which is the NW entrance point of the loch.
Clearing marks: The alignment (237°) of Macringan's Point with the beacon on Trench Flat, 1nm WSW, clears SSE of Otterard Rock.
Port limits
The seaward limit of Campbeltown Harbour is a line drawn between Macringan's Point (55°26'N 005°35'W) and the light on Island Davaar, 0.45nm SSE.
Anchorages
Good anchorage, suitable for small vessels, can be obtained in the E part of the loch to the S and E of Trench Point. To the W of this point the holding ground is poor.
Vessels should not be anchored near the head of the loch, so as to obstruct passage to Campbeltown Harbour.
A large mooring buoy is laid 0.4nm SSW of Trench Point.
Restrictions
The least charted depth in the entrance to Campbeltown Loch is 12.9m, 0.75nm SW of Macringan's Point.
Tugs
Tugs, which are not compulsory, can be obtained with 24 hours notice.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is proposing, in line with EU regulations associated with the ISPS Code, to extend maritime security requirements to ships operating in domestic service and to port facilities serving them. The requirements would be based on those applicable to sea going vessels and generally would apply to domestic ships operating in 'sea areas', and which carry over 12 passengers or are over 500GT. Sea going ships which are certified to carry more than 250 passengers and tankers, especially those carrying oil and gas products, are considered as having the potential to be a target for attack.
