Approach

Approach

Directions for entry: From a position in the entrance to the inlet, about midway between Carrumeira Chico 42°54.4'N 009°10.6'W and Punta Galera 0.9nm NE, the recommended track leads NNW for 2nm through the middle of the fairway to the anchorage SE of Corcubion on the line of bearing 162°, astern, of the beacon on Carrumeiro Grande (passing with positions from Carrumeiro Chico):

ENE of Cabo Cee 0.6nm NNW, a steep point from where a light is exhibited; rocky ground extends 0.2nm S and E from the point, then:

WSW of Castillo del Principe 0.15nm NNE, a prominent, white painted, ruined castle on a small rocky headland. Shoal water extends 0.15nm W from the headland.

Anchorages

Vessels may anchor E of the N end of Playa de Quenje 42°56'N 009°11'W in depths of 13.0m, mud and sand. Anchorage can be obtained farther S, and may be preferable in winter in a S wind, but the bottom is rocky in places and its nature must be ascertained before anchoring.

Small vessels can obtain anchorage in depths of between 6.0 and 7.0m, mud, close SW of Punta Fornelos 42°57'N 009°11'W, recognisable by a large white building standing on the point, but the holding ground is not good.

Explosive anchorage: Vessels carrying explosives or dangerous cargoes anchor on, or S of, the line joining Castillo del Principe 0.7nm ESE.

Restrictions

A fish farming area is located off Corcubion Quay.

Mooring

Final mooring position decided between master and pilot. Jetty is fitted with rubber fenders approx 12m apart, and a tide gauge.

About Brens

updated May 2018

Where it is

Brens is located on the East shore of the Ria de Corcubion, E of Cape Finisterre.

Corcubion, a Sub-Port of Brens lies 0.5nm across the Ria, on its West shore. Both port areas are separated by the town of Cee, at the top end of the Ria.

The port

Port facilities have expanded over the last few years with an additional 323m added to the Brens commercial pier. This mainly handles break bulk and dry cargoes, with over half the annual tonnage being manganese. The pier berths service the nearby Ferro-silicon plant. Brens has no fish market. The main quay area of Corcubion, 0.5nm across on the West side of the Ria, is used principally for fishing activities with some break bulk cargo.

Traffic

The port handles approximately 355,222t of cargo per year. The majority of this is at Brens Pier, with over half the tonnage consisting of manganese.
