Approach
updated May 2024Approach
Approach and entry: Zawia Terminal does not have a designated Approach Report Point but vessels must report their position, course and speed when 12nm off port.
Port limits
The port limits extend N from the shore to 32°50.5'N., 012°44'E.
Anchorages
Vessels are advised to anchor W of a position approx 1nm NW of Berth No 3 and not closer than 0.75nm from any berth without having received permission from harbour master or duty pilot, within port limits to await the pilot.
Tankers are warned that it is unsafe to remain at anchor during adverse weather conditions. The bottom is sand overlaying bedrock and the depth of water approx 35m. When unable to remain at anchor vessels are to keep N of the parallel of 32°52'N.
Restrictions
Berthing during daylight only, unberthing at night only in special cases.
Whilst at a berth, tankers must have main engines ready for immediate use at all times. Sudden and often violent changes of weather may occur without prior indication at any time and vessels may be required to curtail cargo operations, disconnect hoses and vacate the berth at very short notice, the loading master will advise accordingly.
The pilot (loading master) and when appropriate, a cargo surveyor will be in attendance prior to berthing and until berth vacated, suitable accommodation, etc, and normal courtesies to be provided. The pilot may on occasions be detained onboard. Pilot, agent and port officials and service craft are available during daylight hours only. Cargo documentation and outward clearance for vessels loaded will be completed during normal daytime working hours.
Vessels must have sufficient ballast for safe manoeuvring with propeller immersed and trimmed to about 2.4m, by the stern, if in the opinion of harbour master/pilot, the vessel has insufficient ballast berthing may not be allowed.
The discharge of dirty ballast is strictly prohibited. There are no facilities for the reception of water ballast or tank washing ashore, in the case of crude oil vessels, crude oil washing is not permitted.
Tugs
Available.
Mooring
Vessels proceeding to SPM's will have 2 wire rope strops with shackles placed onboard to secure chafing chain ends of nylon mooring ropes. Vessels proceeding to Berth No 1, or No 3, will have a special device placed onboard to accommodate 2 hoses connected to one ship's manifold for the need of cargo line clearance.
Hose handling connecting and disconnecting to be carried out by vessel's crew under the supervision of a deck officer to mooring master's advice.
Masters are requested to have available adjacent to portside manifold, 2 x 15m lengths of synthetic fibre rope 127mm circumference, 6 and 3 kilo hammers, (brass sledge hammers), 2 x 15t chain blocks and/or suitable rope tackle, and large shifting spanner. Wire strop of 1 x 20mm, 25mm diameter about 2-3m length rope lashings.
SALM. Berth No 1: The vessel is secured at the bow with 2 nylon mooring hawser ropes, chafing chain ends are secured by shackles and wire strops, the floating hoses strings on vessel's portside terminate in 12in diameter flanges ASA 150, fitted with neoprene "O" ring gaskets, minimum distance 4.0m, between manifold and vessel's hose rail. Cargo boom min 7t SWL.
CBM Berth No 2: The vessel berthed heading about 310° with 2 bow anchors and 3 buoys (1 stern, 1 starboard quarter, 1 port quarter).

Flat face bolted flange (for lubricating oils only), 1 x 10in diameter.
For those vessels discharging lube oils, a spherical device (pig) will be placed onboard with air compressor, if compressed air service not available on ship's deck. Two refinery employees will oversee the discharge operation and control line clearing procedures and will remain onboard throughout. Food will be supplied from ashore.
