Tides

Max rise, 4.6m; min rise 0.3m; average rise 2.5m.

The ebb stream generally commences when the water level on the bar has fallen from 0.3 to 0.6m, and the flood stream after a corresponding rise in the tide.

Outside the bar the stream sets NNW at the commencement of the flood and, passing through N, ends setting NNE.

On the bar the tidal stream sets obliquely across it, the flood stream setting N, the ebb stream S, with a maximum rate of 2 to 4kts.

Tidal streams off Yingkou run up river for 4 to 5 hours; they may attain a rate of 6kts. It is reported that with strong S to SW winds HW occurs earlier, and with strong N to NE winds there may be practically no HW.

Mooring

Yingkou: Vessels must receive a berth allocation from the harbour authorities before entering; and berths must not be shifted without permission, except due to adverse weather conditions or for the safety of the vessel.

The following procedure is adopted by Yingkou pilots:

The berth is approached with slight headway against the stream, on a converging course of about 10° to the wharf. The offside anchor is let go when exactly abeam the berthing position and nearly 100m from the wharf. Cable is veered rapidly to about 82m; the vessel is then approximately in her berthing position and wire hawsers are passed ashore. A wire hawser attached to a mooring laid well out in the river, is then bought to the stern by a sampan, hauled taut and secured.

In some cases the positions of the hawser moorings, which are laid opposite to the main wharves, are indicated by a large white anchor painted on the wall of a building abeam the mooring.

updated Dec 2016

ETA and pre-arrival notices

The Master should advise the vessel's ETA to the state agent, or through the local agent to the state agency, 72, 48 and 24 hours prior to the vessel's arrival at the pilot station. The ETA message should include the time and date of the vessel's arrival and sea/fresh water draughts.

If there is any dangerous cargo onboard, the Master should also report details of that cargo including description, packaging, IMO code and gross/net weight.

Should the vessel's ETA or other circumstances change, prior to arrival, the Master should send further messages.

The vessel's agent will send instructions to inbound vessels through the Coast Radio Station being used by Inmarsat. The instructions usually include the time and position of the pilot boarding. The vessel is required to confirm receipt of message to avoid delays to the vessel.

Communications

Vessels calling at Chinese ports are recommended to use Shanghai Radio (callsign "XSG") and Tianjin Radio (callsign "XSV") for passing messages at long range. Both stations work throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible through Shanghai.
