Approach

updated Mar 2024

Approach

Clarence River is entered between two breakwaters close N of Clarence Head (29°26'S., 153°22'E). The continuous navigable dredged depth has been increased to 4.2m (Nov 09).

The channel from sea to Yamba is well marked by a series of leading lights. However, these lights may be moved to meet changes in the channel. The Port Authority provides a passage plan to assist vessels and is used as a guide only.

Port limits

The entrance is protected by 2 breakwaters. 1.0nm E of the ends of the N and S breakwaters defines the seaward limits of the port.

Boundaries - The waters of the main channel of the Clarence River, Iluka Bay and Yamba Channel bounded by MHW mark and by, as upstream boundaries, the E side of Harwood Bridge in the main channel and, in Yamba Channel, a line drawn from the S point of Freeburn Island to the E point of Rabbit Island and from there produced SW'ly to the opposite shore and by, as seaward boundary, a line drawn between the E extremity of the N breakwater at the entrance to the Clarence River and the E extremity of the S breakwater at that entrance.

Anchorages

Anchorages are available off Iluka, Goodwood Island Wharf and Palmers Island wharf for smaller vessels (under LOA 80m). The strong tidal streams reduce the holding power even though the holding ground is generally good. As a result, careful anchor watch must maintained at all times. Larger vessels may request anchorage and will be assessed on an individual basis.

It is worth noting that anchorage is not recommended off the coast for vessels waiting to enter the port. Vessels are requested to remain at least 3.0nm from the coastline.

Restrictions

Harwood Bridge.

Vessels must approach Harwood Bridge with extreme caution and must not pass (reciprocal or overtaking) under the bridge. Passage through the navigation span of the bridge, whether it is open or closed, must only be undertaken by vessels when power driven. A prohibited anchorage area is located to the approach to the navigation span, in the event that vessels are waiting to pass, then they are recommended to remain clear of the prohibited anchorage area.

A road and rail bridge consisting of 6 spans crosses the river at Grafton (29° 41.860'S., 152° 56.574'E). Vertical clearance is 7.9m and width clearance of 67m through five of the spans. The bridge has a vertical span

height of 29.3m and width between pylons of 34m in the navigation span. Masters are advised that various cable and submarine pipelines cross the river at regular intervals and are usually indicated by warning notices.

Tugs

Towage is not normally required and will be assessed on an individual basis. All towed vessels over LOA 50m must have arrangements for access and boarding in smooth waters and rigged before arrival. A single screw steel hull tug, "FRANCIS FREEBURN" bollard pull 5t and "FURY", a twin screw steel hull tug, with a bollard pull of 23t. Requests for towage/hire made via the Sydney Integrated Port System (ShIPS) or with Harwood Marine.

Mooring

For Goodwood Island Wharf, vessel berth port alongside however may be instructed to berth starboard alongside due to the tide. In the event that vessels berth stern into the current, they are required to have a bow-thruster and/or tug. Vessels with an LOA exceeding 100m will be required to run ‘long’ head and stern lines. The length of the lines is approx 130m. Vessels with an LOA 80-100m will be assessed on an individual basis.

Berthing at Harwood Marine is daylight only. A vessel may depart at night provided adequate lighting is available for persons tending moorings.

UKC Clearance:

Underway – minimum of 10% UKC during all stages of the passage

Alongside – minimum of 5% UKC

Port approach – 10% plus an additional 1.5m.

Mooring Lines:

Goodwood Island Wharf: Minimum of four linesmen are required for vessels berthing or un-berthing at Goodwood Island Wharf if lines are to be handled outside the fence line.

Vessels with an LOA exceeding 100m will require long-lines run to shore bollards.

Harwood Slipway Wharf: Minimum of four linesmen are required for vessels berthing or un-berthing at Harwood Slipway Wharf.
