Approach

Approach

From a position approx 7nm SW from Ocean Cape Light (59°32'N 139°51'W) the track leads N, then NE, passing (with positions given from the light):

Close W of No 2 Lightbuoy (starboard hand) (3nm W). Mariners unfamiliar with the area are advised not to attempt to pass between the Lightbuoy and Ocean Cape as there is a least depth of 11.3m in this area. Heavy breakers have been observed 0.5nm offshore S of the cape, then:

NW of the shallow patches that extend 1.75nm WNW from Ocean Cape, then:

NW of Point Carrew (1.5nm NNE) the SW point at the entrance to Monti Bay. Between Ocean Cape and Point Carrew, the sea breaks all along the shore which is foul with large boulders. Then:

NW at a distance of 1nm from the N end of the narrow ridge (3nm N) marked by No 4 Lightbuoy (starboard hand) moored approx 1.5nm WNW of Point Munoz (3.5nm NNE) the W extremity of Khantaak Island, and NE point at the entrance to Monti Bay. The N extension of the underwater ridge is steep to on each side, and the usually heavy ocean swell breaks heavily over it.

Anchorages

Yakutat Roads which extend approx 1.5nm N from the N side of Monti Bay, between the very irregular SE coast of Khantaak Island and the mainland approx 0.8nm ESE, affords the best anchorage in Yakutat Bay. Foul ground extends between the mainland and Khantaak Island at the NE end of the roadstead.

Anchorage may be made near the head of Monti Bay, in depths of 31-39m, mud bottom.
