Approach
updated Jan 2019Approach
Xiangshan Harbour is an extensive inlet entered via Huang-nui Chiao (Huangnui Jiao) (29°42'N 121°52'E) and the outer limits of a reef area 2.7nm to the SE marked on the chart as Que Reef (29°39.94'N 121°54.34'E). This area is also known as Que Jiao, Chi Chiao or Pearl Rock. Huang-nui Chiao is an area of partially submerged rock with an outer edge of drying mud flat extending from the shoreline.
The seaward end of the Sound is deep and largely clear of hazards. The Sound extends over 25nm SW, of which the first 11nm is mostly free of dangers, and nowhere less than 1.5nm wide. The shoreline is irregular with inlets and larger bays, mostly consisting of drying mudflats.
Anchorages
A sheltered anchorage is located near the entrance of Xiangshan Harbour, to the SW of Que Reef (29°39.94'N 121°54.34'E) and NW of Jiaoshan Cape (29°38.53'N 121°54.66'E).
Recommended shelter during a typhoon can be found in position 29°31.5'N 121°38.2'E to a depth of approx 9.5m. There is an area of good holding located at 29°30.60'N 121°34.00'E, in depths of 8m to 12m. A number of mooring buoys are located in the Sound, to the W of Gangpanshan.
Small vessels may anchor and find shelter out of the strength of the tidal streams in Baishi Suidao (29°30.36'N 121°35.98'E) inside some islets along the S shore of the Sound.
Restrictions
Xiangshan Harbour has a newly constructed road bridge (29°39.00'N 121°48.20'E) which crosses the Sound in a NNW/SSE direction.
