Approach
updated Mar 2024Approach
The channel is entered between Inishgort Light and the N end of Dorinish Bar, a long spit of shingle and stones, which dries, extending N from Dorinish More (0.8nm S of Inishgort) to within 0.2nm of the light where it is marked by a lightbuoy.
Then the channel passes through Dorinish harbour, entered 0.5nm SE of Inishgort Light, and leads generally ESE between the many islets for a distance of approx 4nm to Westport Bay where an anchorage can be obtained. Above the bay and at Westport Quay a vessel must lie aground. There are also a number of anchorages within 1.5nm of the entrance, where small vessels can find shelter.
Anchorages
Vessels anchor in 6.6 - 8.0m of water at Inishlyre, 4nm from Westport Quay.
Restrictions
Silting is constant throughout the harbour. It is common for the quay to dry alongside.
Mooring
Vessels must not moor in the area of steps by the quays.

About Westport
updated Mar 2024Where it is
Westport is situated on the W coast of Ireland in Co Mayo.
The port
Westport Quay, formerly used to service the agricultural industry, is now used by recreational fishing and pleasure vessels. The port had previously been used to export cargoes including; agricultural produce, canned meats and manures and imported cargoes including; timber, coal, salt, machinery and tar. A survey carried out on Westport stated that the port silted badly and therefore unusable. The last commercial vessel visited the port in 1986.
The area has been zoned for development to include marine based tourism and recreation in the latest draft for the Westport Local Area Plan. The port and local area will be developed once a Master Plan has been proposed and accepted.
