Approach
updated May 2013Approach
The position of the sea buoy is 09°38.22'S 120°15.25'E. The approach is through the deep open waters of Teluk Nangamesi. A projecting point divides the inner harbour into two inlets. The entrance to a swept channel, 500m in width, lies 2.5nm N of the flagstaff at Waingapu.
Leading marks: Front light (white metal framework tower, 9.0m in height)
A beacon (N cardinal) 50m NE of the light marks the outer end of the reef between the entrances to the two inlets of the inner harbour.
Centre mark: White stone pyramid (beacon) 0.12nm S of front mark.
Rear mark: White stone pyramid (beacon) 0.2nm S of centre mark.
From the open waters of Teluk Nangamesi N of the former mined area, the alignment 186.5°of the above mark leads S through a swept channel 0.3nm in width passing, E of a reef over which there is a depth of 7.5m (0.975nm N). A reef, depth 2.4, marked by a beacon lies 0.2nm farther WSW. Another reef (depth 1.3m) lies 0.1nm NW of the beacon. (these dangers lie within 0.6nm E of Tanjung Taimanuk), then W of a dangerous detached reef (0.55nm NNE) marked by a light (tower) standing 01.25nm SE of the NW extremity of the reef, then E of a light (beacon, 0.3nm N) which extends up to 0.3nm of the W shore of the bay, then W of a light beacon (0.25nm NNE) marking the W extremity of the reef extending N from Tanjung Atu. There is a least width of 300m in the fairway between the light beacons marking these coastal reefs. Then course may be set to pass either E or W of the front leading marks.
The port basin has min depths of 5.0m and max depth of 15.0m LWS.
Port limits
The port limits are defined by the parallel of 9°37.5'S 120°16.0'E.
Anchorages
The channel length is approx 1nm leading to the outer roadstead anchorage (09°37.7'S 120°15.7'E), 0.6nm E, in the swept channel, in a depth of 35m close W of the leading line, 0.6nm E of Tanjung Tai Manuk. Care must be taken to avoid the 7.5m reef off the point.
The best anchorage is just within the entrance to the inlet in a depth of 28m, mud and sand, 0.35nm WNW of Tanjung Atu. Small vessels can anchor closer in at the entrance to either arm of the inlet in a depth of 22.0m. The W arm is more spacious, but the bottom is hard, that of the E arm is of stiff mud.
An anchor is embedded in the N extremity of the reef between the two arms, and may be used as a bollard.
