Approach

Approach

Approaches: There are 3 channels of approach to Vastervik.

From the S, the approach channel to the Ido Stangskar entrance is suitable for craft up to 6.5m as far as the anchorage area in Lindodjupet, S of Sparo (57°43'N 016°44'E), then to Vastervik via Sparosund or Idosund with draughts of 4.5m and 5.7m respectively.

The E approach passing 4nm NNE of Kungsgrundet Light, then via the main channel, with a depth of 10.0m, max draught 8.5m, to the outer harbour.

The N approach is made from seaward, close E of Storklappen Light (grey and brown tower, elevation 20m) (57°50.6'N 016°51.0'E), then through a 5.0m channel, joining the main channel 1.2nm E of Vasterbadan Light (red tower, black base, 15m in height) (57°44.8'N 016°44.6'E), then via the main channel to the harbour. This is an inshore route for which local knowledge is required.

Directions for Eastern approach: Main channel, draught 8.5m: Krungsgrundet Light (white lantern on black tower, red band, elevation 27m, Racon) (57°41.2'N 016°54.5'E) is exhibited 3.8nm SSW of the seaward end of the E approach channel.

From a position close N of Vasterviks anchoring Lightbuoy (N cardinal) (57°44.9'N 016°55.3'E), align Vasterbadan Light ahead bearing 269° then maintaining this course through the channel, staying within the white sector of the light, which clears any dangers on route. The channel is well marked by buoys and lightbuoys (lateral).

When 0.3nm from Vasterbadan Light alter course SSW, passing NW of No 4 Lightbuoy (port hand), 0.2nm ESE of the light, to enter Tallskarshalet, a narrow straight stretch of channel, 1nm long, which passes between Tallskaren on the W side and Stangskar on the E side, on which stands a beacon (white cairn, red band, 4m in height). The channel is well marked by buoys and lightbuoys (lateral).

The sides of the channel are indicated by Tallskarshalet Leading Lights in line bearing 205°. On the W side the leading lights (red towers, white bands, elevations 16m and 5m) show green, the Front light is on a rock close off the SE end of Marsholmen, situated 0.6nm SW of Stangskar Beacon and the Rear light is on Grono, 0.6nm from the front light. On the E side, the leading lights (lanterns on red pedestals, elevations 12m and 6m) show red. The Front light is on the E side of an islet 0.15nm S of Marsholmen and the Rear light, 0.5nm from the front, is situated close ESE of the W rear light. The lights are visible only on the leading line with the exception of that close off Marsholmen, which is a sectored light.

There are two very narrow sections in the channel. The first, between two 6.6m patches, 0.35nm SSW of Vasterbadan Light, is marked by Nos 5 and 6 Lightbuoys (lateral). The second, between two 4m patches, 0.2nm NNW of Stangskar Beacon, is marked on the E by No 7 Lightbuoy (port hand) and on the W by a buoy (starboard hand).

Further S in the channel the extremity of the shoal water extending SE from Tallskaren is marked by a lightbuoy (E cardinal) and the extremity of the shoal water extending NW of Larmanshall is marked by a lightbuoy (W cardinal).

About 0.1nm past this lightbuoy the channel swings W to pass through Borgfjarden on the alignment of Korphallan Leading Lights (front, white lantern, elevation 3m) (rear, white lantern, elevation 7m, 180m from front) (57°43.9'N 016°41.3'E), bearing 279°, taking care to pass S of a 5.6m patch, 0.1nm N o Marsholmen, marked by a lightbuoy (S cardinal).

When 0.3nm from the front light and with Borgo Light abeam to port, the channel swings to the NNW, round a lightbuoy (starboard hand), entering Lusarnafjarden which contains the outer harbour of Vastervik.

Vessels with a draught up to 5.5m may enter Lusarnafjarden through the channels to the E of Skansholmarna.

Directions for NE approach: Pass N of Vastervik Approach Lightbuoy (N cardinal, 57°44.9'N 016°55.3'E), moored 5.75nm E of Vasterbaden Light, steer 269° with Vasterbaden Light structure ahead. Dangers on each side of the channel are marked by buoys (spar, port or starboard hand). The channel is authorised for vessels of length 160m, beam 25m and draught of 8.5m When Tallskarshalet Leading Light towers come into line, alter course to 204°.

At night approach in the white sector of Vasterbaden Light bearing between 268° and 269.5°.

Alternatively approach with Stickskar Light (57°43.3'N 016°45.5'E, white tower, 8m in height), exhibited from the islet of that name, situated 0.5nm N of the Ido Light structure, in line with Sparo Light structure bearing 236°. This leads between Langgrund, depth 9.5m, on the NW side of the approach and Syningsknallen, depth 9.7m, on the SE side, lying 6.25 and 5.5nm, respectively, N of Kungsgrundet Lighthouse.

A vessel of suitable draught may continue on the alignment of Stickskar and Sparo light structures to join the E approach channel, W of Norra Baden, but this course leads over a depth of 6.6m, lying between Norra Baden and Sodra Permattsbaden, depth 2.7m, 0.5nm NNW of it.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained, by vessels with local knowledge, in Lusarnafjarden in depths from 10.0-25.0m, soft mud, SE of Lusarna.
