Approach

updated Jul 2018

Approach

Directions: In heavy weather, a vessel without local knowledge should not attempt to enter Vagsfjordur.

Approaching from N, Akraleiti (Akralejte) should be kept bearing approx 341° and open NE of Frodbiarnipa (61°33.0'N 006°44.0'W) until on the alignment 227.5° of Vagsfjordur Leading Lights, These lights leads through the entrance to the fjord, where depths are irregular, passing approx 0.075nm SE of Porkerisbodhi. When inside the entrance to the fjord, steer as required to keep within the white sector of Vagur Harbour Light, passing NNE of the outer end of a mole which extends approx 360m NNE from the S shore apposite the village of Marknoyri. A light is exhibited from a grey mast, 2m in height, situated on the molehead which is also floodlit.

Port limits

The outer limit of the harbour is marked by beacons and extends N from Nupur (61°27.5'N 006°47.3'W).

Traffic schemes and VTS

A vessel traffic advisory service is provided on a 24hr per day basis. The service can be contacted on phone +298 37 30 33. The service can be contacted on VHF Ch 16 (working channel 12 and 14).

Anchorages

Four white rectangular boards, one pair of which is situated on each side of Vagsfjordur near Krossled, indicate the limits of the anchorage for foreign vessels. Anchorage is available almost anywhere in the fjord, as the bottom is chiefly of sand, but the best anchorage, especially in winter, is in the middle of the fjord approx 0.1nm SW of Vagur Harbour Light, in depth of 12.0m, but permission of the Harbour Authority is required. A cooling water pipeline lands 0.2nm SSE of the pier, the pipeline extends from the shore approx 65nm NNE where its intake is marked by a lightbuoy in a depth of approx 4m. Small vessels may anchor near the head of the fjord in a depth of 5.5m, though the area is reported to be affected by weed. In winter many vessels may be found laid up W of Marknore (61°28.0'N 006°48.0'W).

There is good holding ground in Lopransfjordur, the bottom consisting mainly of sand in the outer part, and mud towards the head but space is restricted by a number of marine farms, some of which are seasonal. There is a cove at the head of Lopransfjordur in which small vessels may anchor, but it is obstructed by rocks and exposed to heavy squalls from the hills.

Laid up vessels: W of a line joining Naversten (60°28.0'N 006°47.0'W), and the mouth of Tormansaa River, within designated areas, vessels may be laid up without exhibiting the regulation lights or making sound signals. Such vessels should not be laid up in areas extending approx 30m either side of the inner leading line, nor in the anchorage reserved for foreign vessels.
