Approach
updated Aug 2015Approach
The Grip/Trondheim Channel, 90nm in length, is in protected waters. The mid-channel offers easy navigation. The narrowest parts are in the Trondheim Channel between Terningen and Hemnskjel and at the entrance to Trondheim Fjord and Agdenes, where it is almost 1nm in width (Agdenes/Trondheim 24nm). The Trondheim Channel offers many secure harbours and anchoring sites.
Directions for Trondheim: Apart from Storgrunnen, with a depth of 7.3m, marked by a buoy, 3.0nm NNW of Ostmarktangen; a 9.6m patch lying 0.6nm further N and Munkholmen and nearby shoals, the centre of Trondheimsfjorden, from Rodberg to Trondheim, 11nm E, is deep and clear of dangers.
Rodberg Light changing from green to white bearing 265°, astern, leads S of Slakken, a promontory situated 1.75nm ENE of the light.
Trondheim is normally approached W of Munkholmen, but can be approached E of Munkholmen, care being taken to keep clear of Taren and Tua.
The white sector of Munkholmen Light bearing between 098° and 168° leads N of Digermulen and W of Taren.
Skanse Mole Head Light is a convenient head mark when passing between Hovringsneset and Munkholmen.
The white sector of Ostmarktangen Light bearing between 0605° and 070° leads NW of Trondheim waterfront and S of Munkholmen, but the aforementioned 6.1m patch lies within it.
Ostmarktangen Light changing from green to white bearing 1085° leads N of Tua.
