Approach
updated Jan 2020Approach
The Fairway Buoy is located 1nm W of the breakwaters. Four offshore breakwaters protect all port basins.
Approach: Within the harbour two approach channels are available.
Northern Channel is used by vessels approaching or leaving the Old Free Port, Maritime Station, New Free Port, shipyard, timber terminal and steel works.
Southern Channel is used by tankers, vessels approaching or leaving the industrial canal and vessels which cannot enter the Northern Channel for draught or traffic reasons.
Port limits
From Rio Bovedo to Punta Ronco. Seaward boundaries: 45°41.0'W 013°40.0'W; North breakwaters to the E and to Lat 45°36'N in the W.
Anchorages
The quarantine anchorage is situated in Valle San Bartolomeo.
Cautions: The outer anchorages in the vicinity of Porto di Trieste are exposed from the W semi-circle and strong SW winds cause heavy seas which are dangerous. It is therefore always advisable to have a second anchor ready for letting go as a precaution against these winds or the unexpected onset of a Bora. Although the coast between Trieste and Miramare may be approached safely there are no recommended anchorages and the Bora can be strong.
Anchorage restrictions: Anchorage is prohibited S of a line drawn in a 250° direction from the NW corner of Molo II to avoid obstructing entry to the port.
Anchorage is prohibited in an area extending NW from the head of Port Franco Vecchio breakwater in which there is a submarine pipeline.
A disused dumping ground for explosives is centred approx 0.65nm W of Porto Franco Vecchio breakwater.
Restrictions
No locks, bridges or bars. Tankers and bulk carriers can only enter between 0600hrs up to 2200hrs.
Lightering and topping off areas are designated and authorised by the Harbour Master.
Fog occurs on average 20 days per year, mainly in winter months.
Tugs
There are 10 tugs available ranging from 2,000-5,000hp. Contact VHF Ch 10, 12. All tugs are equipped with mixed polyester and polypropylene lines of 72mm diameter and have a min breaking load of 90t.
All tugs are equipped with fire fighting monitors with a capacity from 150-500m³/hr (120-150t).
Tug assistance is compulsory for tankers over 3,000GT.
Two tugs are recommended for vessels of 25,000t, 3 for vessels of 40,000t, 4 for vessels of 50,000t and 5 or 6 for vessels over 50,000t.
