Approach

updated Jul 2014

Approach

Entry can be made from both ends of the detached breakwater, which lies across the harbour entrance. However it is advisable to use the W entrance as the E entrance is suitable for small craft only. The width of the W entrance is 180m, the width of the E entrance is 130m.

From a position W of the harbour entrance the track leads E through the W entrance, keeping in the white sector of the direction light (36°31'.7N 1°19'.5E) and passing between the W head (36°31'.7N 1°18'.9E) of the detached breakwater, and the head of the SW jetty, 0.1nm SE. Then the track turns sharply, to lead SSE into the harbour, between the heads of the NE and SW jetties.

Caution: Care is necessary when entering the harbour by the W entrance during strong NW winds, to avoid drifting on to the SW jetty. In heavy weather entry is dangerous.

Anchorages

The roadstead at Tenes is exposed from between W and N and the sea breaks at a considerable distance offshore.

The anchorage is exposed to NNW'ly winds and is situated on sandy and muddy ground.

During the summer the anchorage location is approx 0.5nm SW of the W end of the detached breakwater, in a depth of 14m, mud and sand, good holding, clear of the charted wrecks of the area.

During the winter, owing to the prevailing W winds, it is advisable to anchor farther NW, to allow greater freedom to move seaward in bad weather.

Vessels intending to stay for any length of time usually moor to 2 anchors as land and sea breezes prevail, when swinging to a single anchor, it is liable to become fouled.

Vessels anchored in the harbour should be ready to let go a second anchor and to veer cable on the first, as heavy squalls sometimes descend from the mountains during E winds.

Tugs

Tugs are compulsory for all vessels exceeding 500GT.

There are 2 tugs available with a capacity of 750hp and 1,500hp.
