Tides

Mean Max Range 1.4m, mean Min Range 0.1m.

Current: There are two dominant currents which occur both at the outer or the inner basin, namely from E to W and from W to E. The change is every 6 hours and max velocity is 3kts.

Tidal streams in Tanjung Perak are mixed with a strongly predominating semi-diurnal character and nearly corresponds with those of Tanjung Junganyar (07°06'S 112°41'E), the stream turning at practically the same time. The duration of slack water varies considerably. As a general rule the stronger the stream the shorter the period of slack water and vice versa. Close inshore the stream turns from 1-1.5 hours earlier than in the middle of the roadstead, but it does not correspond with the change in the vertical movement of the water.

The consequence of the piling up of the water in the W part of Selat Madura is the same here as occurs in the W channel. During the SE monsoon the W going stream in the roadstead is thus stronger on the average than the E going stream.

Tidal streams in the channel across the bar are mixed with a strong predominating semi-diurnal character. The stream turns at practically the same times as in Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak.

In position 07°22'S 112°57'E the rate seldom exceeds 2kts, and when it attains this rate there is usually a rate of 3kts in Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak.

The rate of the stream in the fairway across the bar is the same as previously mentioned, but on the banks bordering it the rate seldom exceeds 1kt. The stream sets mainly in the direction of the channel.

Approach

updated Oct 2023

Approach

Tanjung Perak from Selat Madura (Madura Strait) is approached through the main 25nm W channel, swept to depth of 9.7m LWS, the outer end of which is marked by a lightbuoy (07°23'S 113°00'E), with 18 buoys along the length of the channel. Then the approach is over a bar which lies between the entrance to Kali Porong (07°32'S 112°52'E) and Tanjung Batuputih on the S coast of Madura.

Port limits

Port limits lie between the meridians of 112°40.1'E and 112°45.0'E and the S coast of Pulau Madura and N coast of Jawa.

Anchorages

The anchorage in the roadstead is divided into two parts by a prohibited area. The W area lies N of Tanjung Perak, but anchorage is not permitted within 0.17nm of the entrance to this basin or off Pangkalan Jamrud. The E area N of Naval Harbour is also under restriction, and permission must be obtained from the Harbour Master.

The roadstead affords safe anchorage in depths of 11.0-20.0m. In both monsoons the holding ground is fairly stiff mud and sand, but when a strong wind and tidal stream combine, a vessel may occasionally drag. Vessels at anchor are affected by the stream setting out of Kali Surabaya, and usually lie heading S.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is dangerous due to submarine cables, which exist across Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak, parted anchor cables and wrecks.

The W prohibited anchorage between the W and E anchorage areas and is bounded on the S side by the alignments (151° and 172°) of two pairs of lights in line standing at the entrance to the Naval Harbour, then the W boundary lies 1nm NNW to Karang Queen Olga, a shoal with depths of less than 5.0m over it, then NE to Tanjung batu Pier (07°10'S 112°45'E) and the E boundary lies N then NE to Batuporon Pier, 0.4nm E of Tanjung batu.

The E prohibited anchorage covers a small area extending E from the E end of Madura Quay (07°12'S 112°44'E); its E limit is marked by a beacon (starboard hand).

Restrictions

Traffic regulations: Overtaking or passing another vessel between Outer Buoy and Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak, until No 7 Buoy (07°11'S 112°46'E) has been passed, is not permitted.

Caution: Vessels should not pass less than 270m off the N side of Naval Harbour, and should proceed at slow speed.

A wreck, marked by a starboard hand lightbuoy, lies 0.2nm NE of the Container Terminal elbow.

Tugs

5 tugs are available and can be requested for use on any stretch of Selat Surabaya.

Mooring

A mooring buoy is located approx 1nm N of the entrance to the Commercial Basin (07°10.96'S 112°43.38'E).
