Approach

updated Oct 2022

Approach

The approach to the port is via the Rajang River, 30km from the Fairway Buoy. Vessels up to 9.0m draught have crossed the bar at Kuala Rajang, but this draught will only permit access to the deep water anchorage at Tanjung Manis. The position of the buoys including the Fairway Lightbuoy in the vicinity of the Kuala bar are subject to movement due to changes in the depths and it is recommended that the advise of the Pilotage Authority is sought before entering.

Port limits

Outer limit: An imaginary line drawn from the Land and Survey Trig Station "N54" on Munggu Tiga to the lighthouse of Tanjung Jerijeh, (02°09.40'N 111°09.79'E), then to the Leading Light Tower at Kuala Igan (also known as Land and Survey Trig Station "TT10"), then proceeding approx E by 15,434m to the Land and Survey Trig Station "TT11" which is situated on the beach between Kuala Igan and Kuala Oya and then to a point at the HW mark on the S bank of the Sungai Kut Canal where it joins the Igan River.

Inner limit: An imaginary straight line drawn due N across the Rajang River from the Land and Survey Trig Station, "N90", which is on a prominent hill approx 914m E of the Kapit Bazaar to a point at the HW on the right bank of the Rajang River.

Anchorages

There is an offshore waiting anchorage near to Rajang.

Tanjung Port Area: A restricted area, which is an anchorage for vessels loading timber from the barges in STS operation, extends across the fairway in the approaches to Tanjung Manis. Prior approval must be obtained before entry into the area; for merchant vessels this is normally obtained by the ship's agent. The anchorage has a minimum depth of 9.1m and capacity for 10 ships.

Restrictions

Vessels are permitted to berth daily from 0600-1830hrs.

There is a restriction on shipping at the bar at the Rajang Delta. Vessels drawing up to 9.0m have crossed the bar.

UKC: During the NE monsoons an UKC of 2.0m is recommended, due to the scent over the bar.

Tugs

Tug services and towage companies are available.
