Tides

Range 2.0m. Tidal streams in Cilacap are almost semi-diurnal. In the channel they follow the direction of the leading marks, but on either side they set over the banks. Off the entrance to the inlet there is an almost constant N going stream. Owing to the influence of Kali Donan, especially in the wet season, the duration of the ebb is usually longer than that of the flood. In the bight in which B3 and B4 Beacons (07°46'S 109°02'E) are situated the flood sets SW towards Small Beacons, 300m WSW, and the ebb NE towards Inner Beacons, 0.5nm SW of Tanjung Karangbolong.

At neaps, the rate of the stream is usually 0.5-1kt, but at springs this may increase to 2-4kts and in the wet season has been known to attain a rate of 5kts. As a rule the max rate occurs approx 2 hours after HW and LW.

Max current is 1.5-4kts. Average wave height is 2.1m with max height of 2.5m from Dec to Feb. Wave height in port basin is very low because the port is protected by Nusakambangan Island.

Approach

The navigation channel begins from Buoy 0 to Karang Talun with 9.5nm length and 150-250m width. Depths vary between 7.0m and 17.0m LWS.

The approach channel is reported to have a min width of 170m from a position 0.7nm ENE of Tanjung Karangbolong, across the bar to the W end of Pertamina Wharf. There is a turning basin S of No 13 Lightbuoy. The channel is dredged to 14.5m as far as the turning basin; then to 12.1m at the W end of Pertamina Wharf. Between Pertamina Wharf and the Cargo Wharf the channel narrows to approx 80m wide with a depth of 8.0m, after which the depth reduces to 5.7m in the reach to Donan Wharf.

The channel is entered between No 1 and No 2 Lightbuoys, moored 0.8nm ENE of Tanjung Karangbolong.

In addition there are three pairs of leading light beacons which lead through the dredged channel. The first pair, exhibited at elevations of 17m and 23m from white towers with triangular topmarks 1.5nm WNW of Tanjung Karangbolong, lead into the dredged channel between the two outer pairs of lightbuoys, on a bearing of 279°. The second pair, exhibited at elevations of 17m and 21m from white towers with triangular topmarks on the N shore of Nusa Kambangan 1nm WSW of Tanjung Karangbolong, lead between the channel lightbuoys N and W of that point, on a bearing of 245.75°.
