updated Dec 2021

Approach

From the vicinity of 35°50'N 005°47'W, in the white sector (174.5°-200°) of Le Charf Light (35°46'N 005°47'W), the track leads S to the port entrance and anchorage passing W of Basse des Almirantes then W of Seuil du Bordj, the outermost of several dangers extending 0.5nm N on the E side of the bay. Passing clear of an ODAS Lightbuoy then W of Basse Khandouri and clear of a dangerous wreck, marked on its N side by a lightbuoy,

W of Roche Bouree, a reef with several heads, marked on its W side by a lightbuoy.

The above shoals are covered by the red sector (200°-225°) of Le Charf Light.

Port limits

The port limits are bounded to the N by a line joining Pointed Malabata (35°49'N 005°45'W) and the mouth of Oued Bahrani (4.25nm WSW) and to the S by the port installations and the shore of the bay.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained in the white sector of Le Charf Light (35°46'N 005°47'W) in depths of between 10.0m and 12.0m, sand, 0.3nm SSE of the head of the breakwater (35°47.5'N 005°47.5'W). In strong E winds anchorage may be obtained off a small beach 0.5nm S of Pointe Malabata (35°49'N 005°45'W) in depths of 12.0m to 16.0m with the light on the point bearing 034°, taking care not to get S of the line of bearing 240° of the breakwater light in order to keep clear of Seuil du Bordj. The nature of the bottom should be ascertained before anchoring as it is rocky in places.

Prohibited anchorage area is established in the harbour entrance N of the recommended anchorage in order to facilitate the movements of vessels in and out of the port.

Anchoring is not recommended, due to the presence of numerous disused submarine cables, E of a line leading NNE for approx 1nm from a position on the shore bearing 021° distance 0.77nm from Le Charf Light. The area lies in the red sector (200°-225°) of Le Charf Light.
