About Tanger-Mediterranean

updated Sep 2026

Where it is

Tanger-Mediterranean (also known as Tanger-Med) is 35km E of Tangier, near the town of Dalia.

The port

The port is an intermodal global logistics hub spanning over 1,000ha and strategically located within key trade routes of Europe, the Americas and Africa. The deep water port opened in 2007 and is now the largest in Africa and one of the largest industrial ports in the world. It consists of three large basins Tanger-Mediterranean 1, Tanger-Mediterranean 2 and Tanger-Mediterranean Passenger and Ro-Ro. The port handles containers, Ro-Ro, passengers, bulk cargo, vehicles and hydrocarbons.

The connections of the port mean that navigational time from the port to Rotterdam is 3 days, to the Americas is 10 days and to China (mainland) is 20 days.

The port has state of the art gantry cranes and software including an AI system that can build a highly detailed wind forecast which predicts exactly which containers are at risk during severe winds.

Traffic

Approx 160,000,000t of cargo, 11,000,000TEU, and 3,200,000 passengers are handled annually.
