Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

Approach and entry: The port is approached through a traffic separation scheme and entered on the alignment of leading lights (Bearing 143°), between Punta Rocallosa (04°34.1'S 081°16.8'W) and Punta Macara approx 1.5nm N.

The depths and edges of the channel change owing to movement of sediment, but the changes are not considered significant to navigation. Nevertheless, care is required in the places, where the leading line passes close to the edges of the channel.

Traffic schemes and VTS

Traffic separation scheme: A traffic separation scheme is established in the approaches to Talara. The scheme is IMO adopted and Rule 10 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea applies.

From a position W of Punta Talara, the track leads through the ENE/E bound lane of the TSS passing (with positions relative to Punta Talara (04°34.2'S 081°17.0'W)):

N of Bajo Ewo (3.5nm SW), then N of the oilfield area (2.5nm WSW) and then to either the pilot boarding areas or the anchorages.

Anchorages

Anchorages will be assigned by the Harbour Master prior to arrival.

Restrictions

Vessels are required, for their own safety, to have enough ballast onboard to be able to navigate safely. In normal conditions, large tankers require a draught of 2.7m forward and 6.7m aft. Ballast can be discharged at the port.

Berthing at Muelle No 1 can be carried out by day or night.

Offshore oil terminal berthing is undertaken during daylight only. Vessels are not permitted to pass between the berth and the shore.

Tugs

Tugs up to 1,350bhp and 3 motor launches available to tow lighters.
