Approach

updated Aug 2019

Approach

Reda Swinoujscie, the inner part of Zatoka Pomorska, is approached from the N or E channels, passing respectively, W or S of Oder Bank (54°21'N 014°25'E), known locally as Lawica Odrzana; the shoal area, which is extensive with a least depth of 4.8m, white sand, is fairly steep-to, except on its N side. The navigation channel is 32nm long with a varying width of 180-200m and a depth of 14.3m. The port entrance is protected by breakwaters.

Turning places: There are three turning places in the river. The first, 370m in diameter, is centred 1nm S of the E breakwater head with depths of 11.0m to 14.0m. The second, 320m in diameter, is centred 0.8nm SW of the first with a depth of 11.0m. The third is off the entrance to the Mielinski Canal.

Port limits

The port area extends about 10km S from the harbour entrance to Basen Barkowy (53°51.3'N 014°17.2'E) on the NW side of Karsibor.

Traffic schemes and VTS

The PR shall contain: A1, D, L.

Anchorages

Ships may anchor in them for an unlimited period. Information on berths available in these anchorages can be obtained from Swinoujscie Traffic (duty officer), who should always be informed of a vessel's position on anchoring.

Vessels leaving anchorage should report their name and port of destination to Swinoujscie Traffic.

Deep draught vessels bound for Anchorage No 3 from the N may use the approach fairway, entering at the fairway lightbuoy 54°26.6'N 14°05.7'E. The track leads S for 8nm to the anchorage. Attention is drawn to the sea area to the W of Oder Bank, where less water is charted and also to the swept depth of 11.2m just N of the anchorage.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited within 0.2nm either side of the entrance leading line and in the vicinity of the wreck, with a depth of 10.5m over it, 4.50nm NNE of Swinoujscie E breakwater head. The E and W anchorages are divided by a submarine cable area where anchoring is also prohibited.

Restrictions

Vessels with length exceeding 176m or draught deeper than 9.0m are allowed to navigate only by day when visibility is not less than 2nm. Restrictions only refer to vessels navigating from the roads (anchorage) to port of Szczecin and vice versa. Vessels entering or leaving port of Swinoujscie are allowed to navigate by day and night, unless Harbour Master advises otherwise. Vertical clearance: A high tension cable, with a safe overhead clearance of 69m, supported by two lattice towers, each 120m in height and showing three red lights vertically disposed, spans the river about 1.5nm SW of the main lighthouse.

Speed restrictions in the roadstead are 8kts for large vessels and 12kts for small vessels.

About Swinoujscie

updated Sep 2026

Where it is

Swinoujscie is situated on the E bank of Uznam Island, at the mouth of the Swina River on S Baltic coast.

The port

The Port of Swinoujscie and the Port of Szczecin are managed by one authority. The port of Swinoujscie is recognised as having the largest dry bulk terminal in Poland. Major bulk cargoes handled at the port are coal, iron ore, fertiliser and aggregates. The port has a modern coal terminal for bulk carriers and there is also a modern terminal for the importation of iron ore.

Swinoujscie ferry terminal additionally offers passenger, car, train and ferry services to Copenhagen, Denmark and Ystad, Sweden.

The port is ice free. Vessels with deep draught can be lightened at this port for inward passage to Szczecin and outbound vessels can be completed to full load. The depths cannot be relied upon due to fluctuating water level and silting. The harbour authorities should be contacted for confirmation.

Traffic

Approx 34,000,000t of cargo and 109,000TEUs (combined figure with Szczecin (see separate entry)), are handled annually.
