Approach

updated May 2010

Approach

The channel is dredged to 100m in width and 10.0m in depth.

After passing midway between Saltskjaer and Bjorneskjaer, vessels should approach Svelvikstrommen on the alignment of Bjorneskjaer and Nedre Knivsvik Light structures, astern, bearing 156.5°, which leads NE of Sondre Svelvikrenna Light structure and between the line of spar buoys. Having passed close NE of Nodre Svelvikrenna Light structure (59°36.1'N 010°25.4'E), vessels should bring Svelvik and Brenna Light structures into line bearing 336.5°, which leads between Batterioy and Verksoya. When abreast the N end of Batterioy, vessels should alter course N and keep Batterioy and Tommeras Nedre Light structures in line, astern, bearing 185° which leads through the N part of Svelvikstrommen.

At night, in addition to the alignments of the leading lights, given above, the white sector of Svelvik Light, bearing between 335.5°-337°, leads through the fairway into Svelvikstrommen to within 0.15nm of the light.

Port limits

The harbour area is bounded S by the line joining the S side of Saltskjaer to the N side of Bjorneskjaer. The N limit is the line extending in a direction 076° across Drammensfjorden from the ballast mark at Rorvik, situated 0.5nm NNW of Blindeskjaer Light structure.

Traffic schemes and VTS

All vessels intending to proceed through Svelvikstrommen should keep watch on VHF Ch 16 and should inform other vessels on that channel in good time of their intended time of passage. Small vessels should keep clear of the channel until deep draught vessels have passed.

Anchorages

There is good anchorage between Saltskjaer and the light on Vesthaken. Depths vary between 7.5 and 14.0m, clay bottom. The roomy anchorage in Vollebukta also has a clay bottom. In Svelvikbukta, N of Svelvik, smaller vessels can anchor in 11.0-15.0m, gravel and clay bottom, and also on Rorvikbanken.

Vessels can anchor along the shore N of Ryggen, off the mooring blocks that have been installed, sand and mud bottom.

On the E side of the fjord, vessels can anchor in Grimsrudbukta, Jerdalsbukta and Hyggenvika, sand and mud bottom.
