Approach

updated Apr 2020

Approach

Summerside Harbour is approached via a tapering channel in the SE part of Bedeque Bay. The harbour is entered through a narrow, buoyed and dredged channel between MacCallums Point (Indian Spit, Light 46°23'N 63°49'W) and Phelan Point, almost 1nm NW.

The entrance channel has a controlling width of 80m and depth of 6.7m and is subject to silting.

Anchorages

Vessels may anchor nearly midway between the breakwater and the piers at Summerside. There is also anchorage in about 8m in the entrance to Dunk River (46°22'N 063°47'W).

Outer anchorage: The roadstead between the E side of Miscouche Bank, (46°23'N 063°53'W) and the shoal ground off the E shore Bedeque Bay, S of MacCallums Point, where there is good anchorage in depths of 6.0-7.0m, sand and clay.

The recommended anchorage position is on the alignment (065°) of the N end of Holman Island, (46°22'N 063°48'W) and MacCallums Point, and with Seacow Head bearing 153°. It is possible to anchor further in, draught permitting.

Restrictions

Approach channel: Silting is liable to occur and affect depth of water. The Harbour Authorities should be contacted for latest information on this.

Ice: The break up of ice in the harbour normally begins in early April, taking up to 4 weeks for complete clearance. Harbour ice forms again approx mid December, soon turning to solid ice. These dates can now vary by up to 5 weeks.

Tugs

A tug may be available.
