Approach

updated Aug 2021

Approach

The terminals are located approx 20nm from the Hatteberget Light Tower and are reached via Marstrands Fjorden and Hake Fjorden. When approaching from the W, vessels must keep N of the area of dangerous mines extending to 57°47'N 011°03'E.

Recommended approach is through South Channel via Algofjurden, passing between N Meholm and S Meholm. The channel between Bratton, Kallon and Almon islands at the N end of Hakefjord and under the Tjornbron bridge is in the form of an "S" bend and vision is obstructed. Engines should be on standby and anchors ready and manned in this area.

Pilots in some cases follow the route S of Hunden Shoal and S Meholm, great caution is needed following this route as there are unmarked dangers, so during darkness and poor visibility the pilots intentions should be fully discussed before entering Algo Fjorden.

Max draught in the approach channel is 12.8m MWL.

Anchorages

While awaiting berth, vessels anchor outside harbour NW of Vattenfall Jetty. There are safe anchorages everywhere, but the fairway S of Galteron Lighthouse should be avoided. Anchorage is also available, with depths of 12.0m, clay and good holding ground, at the W side of the main route about 0.5nm NNW of the Tjornbron Suspension Bridge.

Restrictions

Night navigation is decided by each individual case.

Tjornbron Bridge: Between Marstrand and Stenungsund, max airdraught 43m.

Tugs

Sufficient number of tugs up to 4,000hp available, 5 hours notice must be given. The number of tugs can be reduced if the vessel is fitted with working bow thruster. The pilots require tug assistance for vessels with LOA over 110m. Tugs are made fast after passing Vinterholmen at the N end of Hake Fjord and before passing through the narrows under the bridge, tugs use one to two ship's ropes from the same lead.

Three tugs required for tankers of 50,000DWT.

Mooring

Mooring information is advised by the pilot.
