Approach

updated Oct 2024

Approach

The port is approached via the "Feisten" Light and Skudefjorden. When approaching by way of Skudenesfjorden , round Sveinane at a distance of 0.4nm to enter Kvitsoyfjorden, steer for the E extremity of Tungenes, When approaching Bracken alter course E proceeding through Byfjorden, keeping in mid channel. After passing Vardneset, keep SW shore aboard to avoid Ulsnesgrunn patch, (9.2m), lying 1nm SSE of it, Then SW of Tjuvholmen into Vestre Havn.

From the E of Skudenesfjorden enter Kvitsoyfjorden in the white sector of Fjoloy Light bearing between 106° and 123° then the white sector of Bragen Light (59°02.5'N 005°34.4'E), bearing between 149° and 169°. The latter sector, in conjunction with the white sector of Gryda Light, bearing 080° and 140°, leads through the fairway SW of Nordgrunn and Kolsboane.

From abreast Gryda Light, enter Byfjorden in the white sector of Dusavik Light bearing 138°and 143° which leads through the fairway to the white sector of Tjuvholmen Light, bearing 132° and 139°. Pass W of Ulsnesgrunn, marked on its W side by a lightbuoy (W cardinal) then between Kalhamar and Tjuvholmen Light into Vestre Havn.

It is reported that the corner of a white building bearing 142° is a useful lead for this part of the harbour. Deep draught vessels should avoid the 11.0m patch on the W side of Ulsnesgrunn.

Water depth is in excess of 35m to the inner harbour area, otherwise no limits elsewhere as there is at least 100m water depth beyond the port.

Anchorages

The Harbour Master should be contacted as soon as possible prior to anchoring.

Amoyfjorden: At the N entrance of the port just beyond Mekjarvik, provides sheltered anchorage for oil tankers, rigs, heavy lift vessels and barges and other offshore constructions. Water depth varies from 80m to 120m, good holding ground. There are no limits on the size of ships using the anchorage.

Smaller vessels anchor outside Ulsnes Point where there is up to 40m of water.

Vessels that have not been allocated a berth, including those in quarantine, should anchor near Ulsneset (58°59'N 005°45'E), taking care to avoid submarine cables and water pipelines which exist between Ulsneset, the SW shore and across the channel.

Vessels may not anchor in Vestre Havn without permission.

Deep draught vessel may anchor W or N of Hundvag.

Restrictions

None.
