Approach
updated Aug 2017Approach
Approach and entry: St Peter Port is approached from the S passing between the E coast of the island and The Great Bank about (0.75nm E).
The port can also be approached from the N through Little Russel.
The port is entered between the heads of Castle Breakwater and White Rock Pier.
St Peter Port Harbour Leading Lights:
Front mark: Victoria Marina South Pier Light (white framework tower red lantern, 7m high (49°27.4'N 002°31.9'W)
Rear light: (160m W of the front light) on top of the tall square white building (only visible between 260-270°).
From a position in Great Road the alignment (265°) of these lights leads into the harbour passing between Castle Breakwater and White Rock Pier into The Pool. A lighthouse stands on Castle Breakwater head and a light (round stone tower, 10m in height) is exhibited from the head of White Rock Pier.
Caution: A supporting ledge with a least depth of 2.1m extends out to 3.0m from the W side of the outer spur of White Rock Pier. Caution is necessary when manoeuvring in the vicinity.
Port limits
The port limits are 0.75nm from the N pierhead.
Traffic schemes and VTS
Traffic signals are exhibited throughout 24 hours from the signal station on the head of White Rock Pier. When a red light is exhibited, vessels cannot leave or enter the harbour.
A supplementary red light is exhibited towards the land from the SW corner of a building on New Jetty for the benefit of vessels berthed W of this jetty. When this light is exhibited, vessels must remain at their berth or mooring.
The State Harbour Master has discretion to override the lights and permit the entrance or departure of a vessel. Vessels must not enter or leave or shift berths without the prior consent of the Port Control through the Port Radio Vessels under 15m are exempt.
Anchorages
Anchoring in the harbour is not permitted, this area is kept clear for vessels entering or leaving the port.
Larger vessels may anchor approx 0.48nm ENE and 0.48nm ESE of the harbour entrance. Small vessels may anchor approx 0.35nm or 0.57nm NE of the head of Castle Breakwater.
Outer anchorage: Great Road fronts the harbour and affords good shelter from winds from SSW through W to N; the holding ground is good. Winds from between SE and SSW send in a considerable sea and swell, especially with a falling tide, rendering the anchorage untenable; conditions are also uncomfortable with strong winds from between NNE and SE.
Restrictions
Tidal access to St Sampson's Harbour, drying berths at St Peter Port.
Speed limit is 6kts between the harbour entrance and New Jetty and 4kts W of New Jetty.
Tugs
Available by arrangement with Jersey.
