Approach
updated Nov 2018Approach
When manoeuvring from position "B" to position "E" which is the centre of the anchorage area with 0.5nm radius, vessels should follow the above normal track. The min depth below CD is more than 18.2m. However, after the vessels have passed through position "C" for 2.5nm there is a sandbar with a depth of 16.9m MLWS stretching across the entire channel. A shallow area with a depth of 15.5m MLWS is located at 1.7nm bearing 250° from position "D". The centre of the shoal is at 13°04.06'N 100°49.24'E. Once the vessels have passed position "D" there is again deep water to the anchorage.
Vessels drawing more than 15.0m must cross the sandbar at suitable height of the tide to ensure a safe UKC and should take particular care in keeping to the track or close to S of it to avoid the shallow area. Passing the sandbar on a rising tide the current sets in a S-N direction. Speed should be reduced prior to reaching position "C" in order to minimise squat and to maintain a good steerage and manoeuvrability.
The recommended route for deep draught vessels approaching from S is to make a landfall on Ko Khram, then from position 12°43'N 100°44'E, 1.5nm W of that island, steer 000° to pass 2nm E of Ko Rin, and 1.75nm W of Ko Lan, to position 12°56'N 100°44'E. From this position steer 022° to make position 13°00'N 100°46'E, then steer 037° to cross the bar and make position 13°06'N 100°51'E, 0.7nm S of the pilot boarding place. The track across the bar has a depth of 16.0m, though there are depths of 14.0m less than 1nm NW.
Traffic schemes and VTS
Traffic Separation Scheme: A TSS has been established within the Sri Racha Pilotage District. The scheme runs approx NE, NNE and N between the coast and Ko Si Chang. Inward and Outward Lightbuoys (safe water) lie at each end of the scheme. The TSS is not IMO-adopted.
Vessel Traffic Service: There is a radar equipped VTS control station adjacent to Laem Chabang Light (13°04.6'N 100°52.6'E).
Anchorages
A circle centred in 13°05.00'N 100°51.00'E with 0.5nm radius is defined as the anchorage area where vessels await for pilot, berthing master or berthing instructions. The depth there is approx 18.0m with good holding ground of mud and sand.
Restrictions
Berthing is restricted to daylight hours only.
Tugs
20 tugs available : 10 x 3,600hp, 6 x 2,500hp, 2 x 2,400hp and 2 x 1,900hp. At least one tug is required for mooring and unmooring operations for other berths.
