Tides

Mean Spring Range 0.2m. The tide is mainly diurnal and rises up to about 0.6m, but weather conditions greatly affect the height of the tide. During Feb-Apr sea level may fall 0.5m below normal.

The prevailing winds blow from NE and SE. The NE wind Bora can reach gale force in winter and make berthing difficult in the North Harbour.

Currents: Along the N coast of Kastelanski Zalijev the normal current is E-going but in a Bora or Scirocco it becomes W-going and increases in rate.

Approach

updated Mar 2019

Approach

Gradska Luka is entered directly from deep water. There are no difficulties in entering the harbour. Vessels should pass at least 50m clear of the head of the E breakwater to avoid submerged rocks.

The commercial areas to the E of Gradska Luka harbour include Obala Kneza Domagoja, the N side of the E mole, Lukobran, and three jetties extending from the E side, sequenced S to N, Gat Sveta Duje, Gat Sveta Petra and Gat Sveta Nikole. To the N of the port area there is a small inner harbour, entered between the head of Gat Sveta Nikole pier and a small mole extending E from the W part of the City of Split.

Deep draught vessels approaching Gradska Luka from E are also advised to note two rocky ledges lying between 2nm and 3nm SE of Pomorac Obelisk located at the head of the main breakwater.

The approach into Sjeverna Luka is marked by lights and lightbuoys. Vessels should approach Katelanski Zaljev between the mainland at Rt Marjan (40°30'.5N 16°23'.3E) and Rt Ciova, 1.25nm S, the E extremity of Otok Ciovo, and then via the E part of Kastelanski Zaljev.

Anchorages

Anchorage for vessels waiting for an alongside berth can be found in the vicinity of Gradska Luka and Kastelanski Zaliv as follows:

Gradska Luka: All vessels, other than large vessels and vessels carrying dangerous substances, must anchor in the roadstead 0.2 to 0.6nm S of the E breakwater head in 40 to 49m, good holding. Care is necessary to avoid a submarine pipeline laid SSE from Rt Bacvice about 180m E of Pomorac Obelisk (43°30.0'N 016°26.9'E). The pipeline is marked by:

Two lights (fixed red, on metal columns) exhibited from the vicinity of Rt Bacvie. The alignment (334°) of these lights indicates the direction of the pipeline. A spherical lightbuoy (special) (about 0.9nm SSE of Pomorac Obelisk) indicates the seaward end of a pipeline. There is also a lightbuoy (special, ODAS) moored about 0.4nm SE of the seaward end of the pipeline.

Kastelanski Zaljev: Large vessels may anchor in Kastelanski Zaljev, SE of Kastel Kambelovac in depths from 12 to 20m, with good holding ground.

Smaller vessels may also anchor off the villages bordering the bay or, with local knowledge, moor in their harbours. With prior permission, they may also anchor in the Oceanographic Institute's Harbour at Rt Marjan, sheltered from all directions except W.

Vessels carrying dangerous substances and of less than 7.5m draught, anchor in an area centred 3.25nm ESE of Gradska Luka E molehead light (43°30.069'N 016°26.174'E).

Vessels carrying dangerous substances and of more than 7.5m draught, anchor in an area centred 4.25nm SEof Gradska Luka E molehead light (43°30.069'N 016°26.174'E).

Caution: Vessels do not normally anchor of the N coast of Otok Ciovo, where the Bora and Scirocco blow stronger than anywhere else in the bay. Submarine cables are laid W and NW from the vicinity of Luka Lora (43°31'.5N 16°25'.5E) and SW from Rt Marjan (43°30'.5N 16°23'.3E).

Luka Poljud is the quarantine anchorage.

Prohibited Anchorages: Gradska Luka: N of the harbour entrance. Sjerverna Luka: W and N of Luka Lora. Fishing is also prohibited.

Restrictions

Daylight berthing only for LPG carriers and tankers over 20,000DWT. Tankers over 10,000GT using Sjeverna Luka must do so during daylight hours.

Prohibited Passage: Between a light buoy (starboard hand) approx 2.5nm N of Rt Marjan and the shore SE where there is a small jetty, three mooring buoys and two dolphins.

Between the shore and four spar buoys moored in front of a chemical factory (42°32'.7N 16°24'.8E). The E and W limits of the area are marked by white notices on the shore.

Prohibited Areas: Within Luka Lora.

Alongside the small quay approx 0.2nm NE of Rt Marjan.

Alongside Pristan Brizine (42°32'.2N 16°27'.6E) in Sjeverna Luka.

Stopping is not allowed within 1,000m of Hrid Galija (42°31'.93N 16°25'.12E)

Brodogradiliste Split (43°31'.8N 16°28'.0E): All vessels must reduce speed when passing this shipyard. To the E of this area, navigation and anchorage are prohitibed within 100m of a floating dockmoroed alongside a quay in Uvala Stinice. All vessels must proceed at a speed which does not create a wash. Extra care must be taken when the dock is being raised or lowered.

Freshwater springs exist in places, some of the strongest being between Rt Marjan and Rt Ciova.

Tugs

Tugs up to 1,425hp of which 8 are fire fighting tugs. Tugs should be requested 3 hours before and cancelled 1 hour before.
