Approach

updated Oct 2017

Approach

Approach and entry: The harbour is approached on the alignment of a leading line and leading lights, through a channel marked by buoys and lightbuoys and entered through dredged channels on the alignment of leading lights, marked by buoys and lightbuoys.

Alternatively, with local knowledge, approach may be made through the shoal area, some of which are marked by buoys and on the alignment of leading lines, then joining the main channel near the harbour,

The main approach channel into Solvesborg is from SE and is authorised for a draught of 7.7m. Entered 2.5nm S of Sillnasudde, it leads 3nm NW before turning NNE through the outer roads, 1nm SW of Vastre Nas and then through a dredged channel into Solvesborgsviken. It is well buoyed and lighted.

Directions for main approach: Approach from SE steering 313° with Tunoren Light (56°00'N 014°32'E) (white framework tower, elevation 19m) ahead on that bearing. The light structure stands on a group of rocks awash, 2.5nm W of Sillnasudde.

An auxiliary light is exhibited, at an elevation of 11m, from the same structure in order to assist small craft entering Saxaviken.

The track leads between buoys (spar) marking shoals on either side which include, on the SW side, Spattgrund, depth 5.5m and Bullerasen, depth 5.0m, which lie 2.25nm and 1.25nm, respectively, SE of Tunoren Light.

Alter course NNE round Revbadorna Lightbuoy moored 0.7nm SE of Tunoren Light to bring Solvesborg Leading Lights (red diamonds on white framework towers, elevations 17m and 7.0m, 0.65nm apart) into line bearing 026°. The front light is situated 0.5nm N of Vastra Nas.

This line leads between the buoys (spar) marking shoals in Yttre Redden and through a channel, dredged to a depth of 8.2m over a bottom width of 65m. In addition to the buoys (spar) which mark either side of the channel at frequent intervals, the E side is marked by No 1 Lightbuoy and the W side by No 2 Lightbuoy. There is also a dolphin standing on each side of the channel abreast Vastra Nas.

When clear of No 2 Lightbuoy, alter course N to bring Inre Redden Leading Lights (red triangles on masts, elevations 8.0m and 5.0m, 90m apart), situated 0.35nm NNW of Solvesborg Front Light, ahead bearing 355.5°. These lights lead through Inre Redden and to Ytterhamnen.

Directions for alternative approach: Approach initially with Lagerholmen Lighthouse (55°58'N 014°28'E) in line with the W slope of Ivoklack bearing 348° or, with Fjalkinge Stora Backe bearing 323° until Solvesborg Leading Lights are in line, then alter course with these marks in line bearing 026°.

The track leads 0.6nm SE of Labansgrund, depth 5.0m, which lies 1.75nm SSE of Lagerholmen Lighthouse.

Keep close W of the buoy (spar) which marks the W side of Kanningen, depth 5.0m, lying 2nm SE of Lagerholmen Lighthouse.

The track passes over 2 shoals, each with a depth of 7.5m, which lie 0.15nm SSW and 0.35nm NNE of Kanningen.

Then pass 0.2nm SW of the spar buoy marking the S side of Kaglan, depth 6.0m, which lies 2nm ESE of Lagerholmen Lighthouse.

A 6.5m patch lies on the W side of the channel, 0.55nm NW of Kaglan.

Then, having passed between Bullerasen and Galtryggen, depth 4.7m, lying 0.55nm NW of Bullerasen on the W side of the channel, join the main channel close W of Revbadorna Lightbuoy (55°59.6'N 014°33.5'E).

At night approach with Lagerholmen Light bearing approx 340° until Solvesborg Leading Lights are in line 026°.

Port limits

Outer limits Taggen Buoy.

Anchorage may be obtained by vessels with local knowledge in Inre Redden, on the E side of the fairway SSW of Ostra Kumlet, (56°02.0'N 014°35.2'E) an islet on which stands a beacon, 0.2nm W of Ytterhammen, in depths of approx 6.0-7.0m, mud and clay.
