Approach

updated Nov 2017

Approach

There are 2 buoyed channels leading into Slite Hamn between the islands which lie off the entrance.

Mago (57°41'N 018°52'E), the S island, situated 15nm NNW of Ostergarn is 10m in height and barren.

Mago Light (white tower, 6.0m in height (57°40.8'N 018°51.5'E) is exhibited from the S point of the island.

Mago Beacon (horizontal barrel on pole 4.0m in height, on a white 4 sided truncated pyramid, 9m in height) stands on the summit of Mago island, N of the light tower.

Enholmen, the W island, has fortifications and a house which show well to seaward.

Grundet, a low grassy islet, lies 0.3nm E of Enholmen.

Grundet Light (white lantern, elevation 4.0m) is exhibited from the W of the islet.

Asunden, the N island, is somewhat higher, covered with grass and connected to the coast N by a reef partly above water.

Directions: Djuloppet, between Enholmen and Grundet, is the deepest of the 2 approach channels, it has a width of 0.2nm and a depth of 8.4m, max draught permitted is 7.8m.

A 5.3m patch lying 0.55nm W of Mago Light tower, may be passed on either side though the buoy (spar, W cardinal) marking it is moored on its SW side.

To pass W of this patch keep the E side of Enholmen in line with Labro Church bearing 350°.

To pass E of it, keep Grundet Light structure (57°42'N 018°50'E) in line with Larbro Church bearing 346°.

When the N point of Mago is abeam, bring Larbro Church midway between Enholmen and Grundet which will lead in mid channel between the 2 islands. The channel is marked on its E side by No 1 Lightbuoy (green, light quick flashing green) and on its W side by No 2 and No 3 Lightbuoys (quick flashing red).

Smallhalet, with a least charted depth of 3.8m, leads between Grundet and Asunden.

Bring Lanna Beacon (white diamond on pole 6m in height, on white cairn 3m in height), situated N of the cement factory, 3nm NW of Mago Light tower, into line with Othem Church, 2.75nm farther NW, bearing 312°.

This leads SW of a buoy (plain spar) which marks a 3.0m patch S of Asunden, and NE of a buoy (spar) marking the limit of shoal water extending N from Grundet.

Enter the buoyed channel into Slite Hamn, draught 6.9m, 0.3nm NW of Grundet Light structure.

Leading Lights (red triangles on framework masts; elevations 20m and 16m; 0.1nm apart), situated near the cement works (57°42.7'N 018°48.5'E), in line bearing 320.5°, lead through this stretch of the channel and to the cement works harbour N of Slite Lanthamn.

For Slite Lanthamn, alter course W when 0.5nm N of Enholmen.

Approach and entry:

There are two buoyed channels leading into Slite Hamn, between the islands which lie off the entrance. The harbour is entered on the alignment of leading lights.

Anchorages

Anchorage may be obtained in depths from 6.0-7.0m, in the roadstead W of Asunden, N of the mined area and E of the deep water channel.

Prohibited anchorage: Anchorage is prohibited within 50m of the submarine cable, which is laid between Asunden and Slite.

Anchoring is prohibited within 50m of a submarine cable laid between Asunden and Enholmen, N of Grundet.
