Approach
updated Oct 2020Approach
When entering the harbour with the flood stream, due caution should be taken when near White Rocks, as the stream sets directly to them. When leaving the harbour with the ebb stream, keep as close to these rocks as prudent to avoid being set onto Horseshoe Shoal, to the SW.
During the SW monsoon deep draught vessels from W should approach keeping Laule Taung (beacon hill) bearing 091° which leads between Oyster Reef and Heckford Patch. When the beacon on White Rocks bears 350° and is in line with Savage Island Light tower (on the NW point of Savage island), steer for it on that bearing. This leads over the outer bar in a least depth of 7.6m.
When approx 1.25nm S of the beacon on White Rocks, alter course W to make good a track of 330° passing approx 0.5nm WSW of the beacon. Then when Savage Island Light tower bears 090° alter course NE to pass 0.25nm NW of Passage Rock and then approx 0.35nm SE of the buoy, at the outer end, of Fakir Reef. When Fakir Point bears 315° alter course N to pass between the Point and Saunders Shoal, and steer for the anchorage, or for the inner bar. Vessels entering should keep well up river after passing the buoy off Fakir Reef before turning towards the anchorage during the ebb.
Anchorages
Vessels usually anchor in the W branch of the river, close offshore between Main Wharf (20°08.3'N 092°54.3'E) and the entrance to Satyogya Chaung.
A convenient anchorage for vessels of less then 5.5m draughts is approx 0.25nm S of the main wharf.
When anchored anywhere inside Fakir Point vessels are very liable to drag their anchors during spring tides.
Anchorage is prohibited approx 1nm NNE of the main wharf due to a pipeline.
Restrictions
Accessible to vessels up to 146m in length and max draught 8.2m, subject to deduction for vessels of less than 10kts speed. Necessary to shift berth for max draught when a vessel awaits HW. The outer bar has depths of 7.6m and inner bar 4.8m at LW.
Vessels are prohibited from entering and leaving the port between sunset and sunrise.
